Eastern Washington University invites applications and nominations for our Dean for the Libraries and Learning Commons

We seek a Dean of Libraries and Learning Commonds who will demonstrate a creative understanding of the evolving role of academic libraries as a service-centered academic division focused on meeting student needs.

Vision and Context
Eastern's Libraries stimulate and support intellectual inquiry. They foster interactive relationships among faculty, students, staff and the community in the context of the mission and vision of the University. The Libraries serve as the focal point of University intellectual life by supporting academic endeavors including curriculum development, student research, instructional delivery, and development of critical inquiry. They provide special services to support faculty research and to stimulate a vital campus culture and life.

Eastern is co-located on two campuses (Cheney and Spokane) with satellite operations throughout Washington State, as well as expanding online operations. Eastern students come from over 40 states and 70 countries; over 30% are from diverse backgrounds, and over 50% are the first in their families to attend college. Our population of non-traditional students is also growing, including working students, students with children, delayed starters, veterans, and career changers.

Our Dean will advance our vision for the future of Eastern's Libraries to meet evolving student needs, wherever and whoever they are. Further, our Dean will foster a work environment that continues to welcome change, innovation and collaboration to meet new challenges.

The Dean will lead efforts to identify and operationalize opportunities within library practice and culture that may contribute to student engagement and retention, and in support of the university's mission: Eastern Washington University expands opportunities for personal transformation through excellence in learning. The Library's strategic plan is located here: https://www2.ewu.edu/library/services/library-administration/library-mission-and-strategic-goals

Recent Successes
During the past five years, the Libraries have successfully launched two new transformative services, with the establishment of a Learning Commons in the main library on the Cheney campus and the implementation of a shared Integrated Library System with the other members of the Orbis Cascade Alliance.

o The Learning Commons supports the entire student learning experience. Cross-disciplinary and cross-curricular connections among University academic services and students help create knowledge communities to enhance student learning through integrative processes that allow for collaboration, skill building, authentic practice, and reflection. The Learning Commons combines traditional research services with writing help, peer tutorial programs, computing and technology support, individual and group study, and other services to support the processes of inquiry, analysis, understanding, synthesis, and the creation and expression of knowledge.

o The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 38 academic institutions in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The mission of the Alliance is to strengthen member libraries through collaboration in order to support the work of our students, faculty, staff, and researchers. Among Alliance strategic initiatives is the implementation of a 21st century shared ILS. The Dean represents EWU as a voting member on the Alliance Council. You may find out more about the Alliance here: https://www.orbiscascade.org.

o A third notable success is fundraising. As just one example, funds in excess of $50,000 are raised yearly in one of the Libraries' signature annual events, Oktoberfest. Profits are realized at this event from ticket sales, sponsorship and underwriting, auction purchases and gift in kind auction items. Oktoberfest funds go directly into the EWU Libraries' Collection Endowment Fund to be used for purchase of books, journals, electronic resources, and other critical student resources.

Another example of fundraising is partnering with individuals or groups to raise funds for the Libraries. In 2014, the brothers of the Zeta Nu Chapter (EWU) of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity pledged to raise a goal of $250,000 and made great strides toward this goal by pulling together $100,000 in one evening, an unprecedented feat at EWU.

Necessary Characteristics and Roles of the Dean
The Dean will exhibit a strong commitment to collaboration among library administration, faculty, staff, and students, and will be committed to developing the full potential of the library's human resources as well as strong functional relationships with other constituent groups. The successful candidate's management and communications style will be open and collaborative, encouraging (enabling) library faculty and staff to experiment with new ways to develop, update, and deliver library services to both on-campus and off-campus users. Additionally, the Dean will support our commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive community for all its members. EWU seeks a Dean who offers professional or personal experience and interest in culturally diverse groups, diverse learning styles, and in the ability of higher education to contribute to a more just and inclusive society.

The Dean will be a key member of the academic leadership team as the University continues to serve a diverse student body with high-quality professional and liberal arts programs. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is responsible for all areas of Library administration, which include strategic planning, policy and program development, resource management, and utilization of emerging technologies. As a member of the Academic Affairs Council and Cabinet, the Dean participates in university-wide decision making and planning.

See the Duties section for a listing of specific position responsibilities and accountabilities.
