Library Director – Spring Lake District Library (MI)

Spring Lake District Library’s Board of Trustees seek an exceptional candidate--excited and ready to lead a vibrant, well-respected Library to the forefront of library service! Serving a District of 18,260 residents, the 34,500-square foot library (new in 2002) has a staff of 32 (11.1 FTEs), a collection of 148,161 items, and an annual operating budget of $1.6 million. The SLDL is an independent taxing District funded by two millage levies based on property tax (with one coming up for renewal in 2020). The Director, through vision, compassion, and energy will lead an experienced staff to continue to provide exceptional customer experiences through impactful programs and services. Opportunities include representing the Library externally to community stakeholders, completing planned energy efficiency upgrades/replacements, developing and implementing a strategic plan for Library advancement, and working with community leaders to achieve a successful millage campaign for the sustainability of library services.

Spring Lake Village and Spring Lake and Crockery Townships are some of Western Michigan’s finest small and friendly communities located just minutes from Grand Haven, Holland, Muskegon, Grand Rapids and, of course, Lake Michigan. The Village of Spring Lake is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Spring Lake and the Grand River with many public access points to the water. Year-round tourism is a major industry in the area, featuring a wealth of restaurants, shops and businesses, financial and medical services and a wide variety of residential opportunities. Spring Lake has the charm of small town living with excellent schools, many churches, and thriving downtown business communities nearby. The area is also known for its wealth of natural beauty—residents enjoy year-round recreational opportunities that provide the ideal setting for boating, golf, snow skiing, or just relaxing. Spring Lake is home to miles and miles of bicycle paths including a 12-mile loop that weaves around the lake, and links to paths in neighboring communities. For more information about the Library, the position and the area, see SLDL Links.

Responsibilities. Under the general direction of the Spring Lake Library Board, the Director is responsible for all library operations, including the management of a public library collection and the provision of library services to patrons. Key areas of responsibility are personnel, budget, facilities management, representing the Library in the community and at the Lakeland Library Cooperative, and development and implementation of strategic goals. The Director will also guide the continued integration of appropriate and emerging technologies in the services and administrative operations of the Library. See the full position description for complete details.

Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include a Masters’ Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program; a minimum of five years of library experience, including three years of supervisory and/or administrative experience in a public Library or equivalent environment; and the ability to obtain and retain a Librarian’s Professional Certificate (Level 2 or Level 1) from the Library of Michigan as required by state law for a Class IV library. Essential attributes and skills include: visionary leadership skills, the ability to build productive partnerships through civic engagement, excellent interpersonal skills (friendly, caring, connected, trustworthy, and empowering), experience with budgeting and financial management, and operational excellence. Successful experience as a library director reporting to a governing board and experience with a successful millage campaign are highly desirable.

Compensation. The starting salary range is $70,000 –$80,000 (with placement dependent upon qualifications) and an attractive benefits package.
