The Sciences Data Librarian will be joining the UCLA Library at an exciting time, joining a recently-formed department that is using a matrix structure to better meet dynamic and evolving campus teaching and research needs. Although physically located in the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, the incumbent will be part of a team working to support users at multiple library locations and will have the opportunity to help shape that engagement in research data services. The incumbent will dedicate 20% of their time assigned in one of the multi-unit functional areas in the User Engagement division – either Collections, Outreach, Research Assistance, Research Partnerships, or Teaching and Learning. The incumbent will play a key role in building this collaborative program at the Library and furthering substantive engagements with the campus. To succeed in this multi-faceted role, the incumbent will need to be team-oriented, with the ability to both lead and support colleagues.

Position Duties
With a demonstrated understanding of the work of laboratory scientists, the scientific process, and the impact and potential of data science methodologies to research, the Sciences Data Informationist provides a broad range of research data management and information services. Working with campus partners and library colleagues in Sciences User Engagement and beyond, the incumbent designs, implements, and assesses library services and activities related to sciences research data management. These services include consultations, curriculum development, leadership in training librarian colleagues, and outreach to UCLA students, faculty, staff, and researchers in the UCLA Health Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Engineering communities. This position will work both as a team member and independently. The Sciences Data Librarian is a member of the Sciences User Engagement Division and reports to the Head of the Sciences Division.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:
·        Develops programmatic approaches to support data science and data literacy at scale, including courses, workshops, and train-the-trainer systems.
·        Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with researchers, clinicians, graduate students, and research centers in order to increase understanding of the information needs of the research community.
·        Consults on strategies and tools across various aspects of the data life cycle, especially developing of data management plans, data cleaning, copyright/intellectual property issues, and data visualization.
·        Analyzes current practices for UCLA researchers’ management of data and provides leadership in long-term planning of research data services in the sciences.
·        Translates scientific knowledge into promotion of bioinformatics tools, specialized databases, and ontologies to the sciences communities.
·        Assists researchers and staff with meeting funder and university requirements for providing public access to research results, including data.
·        Collaborates with others in the Library (e.g., Data Science Center) and UCLA communities (e.g., the Office of Research Administration and the Institute of Digital Research and Education) to develop capacity and promote robust and cohesive research data services.
·        Serves as liaison to relevant centers and labs in the Physical Sciences, Health Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering.
·        Works with Library Development to identify, cultivate, and steward donors, collections, and gift funds.

Required Qualifications
·        Advanced degree OR significant professional experience in a life, health, physical sciences or engineering field OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience)
·        Experience teaching tools for data collection, annotation, analysis or visualization.
·        Demonstrated understanding of the work of scientists, the scientific process, and the impact and potential of data science methodologies to their research.
·        Knowledge of research data management and common challenges regarding data sharing and curation.
·        Experience in one or more of the following data science areas: bioinformatics, statistical & machine learning methods, or data visualization.
·        Ability to communicate and apply information and research data management concepts to common practices in the lab using familiar terminology for researchers.
·        Understanding of the academic library’s role in research, teaching, and learning.
·        Demonstrated capabilities with research consultation and instructional services, enthusiasm for teaching one-on-one and to groups.
·        Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
·        Ability to work collegially, as a leader and team member, with library colleagues.
·        Excellent analytical, organizational, time and project management skills.
·        Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications
·        ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience);
·        Background working with qualitative and quantitative data.
·        Background working with scientific repositories or digital libraries/infrastructure.
·        Experience in laboratory environment or as a member of a research team.
·        Knowledge of general and/or biosciences data repositories (NBCI databases, Dataverse, Figshare, etc) as a user and a contributor.
·        Familiarity with common tools related to research data management or data visualization: DMPTool, Git/Github, Open Refine, Open Science Framework, R, Python graphing libraries, Tableau, etc.
·        Experience in donor relations and stewardship.


General Information
Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. Librarians at UCLA are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This is a represented position. They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. Appointees to the librarian series at UC shall have professional backgrounds that demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and flexibility. Such background will normally include a professional degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program. In addition to professional competence and quality of service within the library in the primary job, advancement in the librarian series requires professional involvement and contributions outside of the library, and/or university and community service, and/or scholarly activities. Description of Unit
User Engagement (UE) unites public services librarians and staff across three major divisions (Sciences; Arts, Music, and Powell; and Management/Humanities and Social Sciences) and five functional teams (Collections, Outreach, Research Assistance, Research Partnerships, or Teaching and Learning).The UE group is a matrixed organization designed to enhance library services through a cross-disciplinary and cross-functional approach.

The Sciences division is comprised of librarians and staff from three library locations. The unit supports research, teaching, and clinical care in a wide variety of settings and at all levels, including specialized collections and services for health, physical, life, and applied sciences and engineering, as well as undergraduate support for all disciplines. The team consists of 9 FTE librarians and 1 FTE computer resource specialist.
