Position Announcement—Japanese Studies Librarian



The Japanese Studies Librarian is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Director of Arts & Humanities in the University Libraries. Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities; virtual reference and instruction services; classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program; selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Japanese and Korean; and working collaboratively with the Chinese Studies Librarian to guide collection management decisions in the vernacular of East Asian languages collections. This position serves as one of two liaisons to the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies and shares responsibility for the development and delivery of research and instructional services for students and faculty in these units. The Japanese Studies Librarian supports the integration of new technologies and services into the Arts & Humanities department and actively participates in departmental policy planning and delivery of services. The University of Colorado Boulder holds the largest research collection of Asian language materials in the Rocky Mountain region.



The Arts & Humanities Department provides virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the arts and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.



Requirements:

·        Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution by the time of appointment.

·        Superior Japanese language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English.

·        Familiarity with an academic or research library working environment, which could include reference and instruction, collection development, virtual reference and learning management software, or Asian-language cataloging.

·        Academic background in the field of Asian studies.

·        Strong interpersonal skills.

·        Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and/or professional achievement at a national level.



Appointment and Salary:   

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the senior instructor or assistant professor level. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.
