Media Cataloger
Florida International University

The Florida International University Libraries are seeking an energetic and service-oriented full-time Media Cataloger. Reporting to the Head of the Cataloging Department at Green Library but located primarily at the Hubert Library, the Media Cataloger will have responsibility for original and complex copy cataloging and authority work for materials for the FIU Libraries’ audio and video collections, whether online or tangible. In addition to newly acquired media, the work will include the cataloging of reformatted media from the libraries’ Special Collections and/or Sound and Image Departments, as well as cataloging the historic phonograph recordings in the Diaz-Ayala Collection. This project requires close cooperation with Sound and Image, Systems and the Digital Collections Center in order to cross-walk the metadata from a local database into standard metadata schema for easy user access, with both thumbnails and full-size images of the cover art, sound clips and possibly full streaming audio. As time permits, the Media Cataloger may also process authority control reports and catalog books, serials and other physical or electronic media for the FIU Libraries.

FIU catalogers work in a statewide shared bibliographic database, currently using the Aleph library management system. Cataloging is done following national, state and local standards. The consortium of State University Libraries plans to implement Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new international cataloging standard, in synchrony with the Library of Congress on March 31, 2013. The Media Cataloger will be expected to take a leadership role in the implementation of RDA for media materials. FIU catalogers contribute to NACO/SACO. Librarians are expected to participate in professional development, research, and service activities to meet the Libraries’ and University’s requirements for promotion.
