Librarian III – Branch Services (Bilingual)
Examination #: 130843-02
$6,738-$8,318/monthly salary, plus excellent benefits

The Library
The Santa Monica Public Library serves the city of Santa Monica (population 89,736) and surrounding Los Angeles area communities and currently operates four library facilities in 8.3 square miles. A fifth library, the Pico Branch, is under construction and is expected to open in early 2014.The 104,000 square-foot Main Library has a strong civic presence in the downtown, and the branch libraries are located in diverse, residential neighborhoods with lively commercial districts nearby.

The Santa Monica Public Library has received a top, five-star rating by the LJ Index of Public Library Service for the past three years. The City is strongly committed to education and to its municipal library system that offers exceptional collections, online resources, services, programs and facilities. The Library’s organizational culture is responsive to new ideas and encourages staff development at all levels. The Library has a budgeted FTE staff of 114.8, including 36.5 permanent librarians, and is supported by a total budget of $12.04 million for FY2013-14.

The Position
The Librarian III-Branch Services is a full-time, English/Spanish bilingual position that performs professional librarian and administrative functions at the new Pico Branch Library scheduled to open in early 2014. The branch manager supervises professional and support staff, monitors budget expenditures, manages popular collections, coordinates branch programming, oversees branch facility usage, and performs community outreach. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to customer service, strong supervisory skills and expert knowledge of delivery of services to youth and families in a diverse neighborhood.

The new Pico Branch Library is located in Virginia Avenue Park. The Park has separate facilities for a Teen Center, Park Center and the Thelma Terry Community Center. The Pico Branch fulfills a neighborhood need and is the result of an extensive community process. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic branch manager to integrate library services and programs into a wealth of recreational and human services programs offered by Park staff. Virginia Avenue Park is also the site of a popular, weekly Farmers Market. Santa Monica College and Edison Language Academy, a dual-language immersion elementary school, are located nearby.

Requirements
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university.
