The Harris County Public Library seeks a dynamic, outgoing, and creative library director to provide the strategic vision and leadership to implement appropriate cutting-edge services and technologies and lead the library into the future. We are looking for a director who has a proven record of managing a diverse staff and excels at communication, building teams and partnerships, empowering staff, and collaborating with other area agencies in a politically savvy environment; a librarian who can ensure excellent customer service, articulate and promote the library’s mission and work cooperatively with the County Administration as well as the Library Foundation and Friends.
The Library Director serves a diverse population of approximately 1.8 million in the communities surrounding but not including the city of Houston. Plans, directs and oversees the activities and operations of Harris County Public Library through its 26 branches. Leads a staff of 375 with the help of a Deputy Director and two Assistant Directors and ensures excellent customer service. Works closely with the Harris County Executive Director of Budget Management in the formulation of the library budget and communicates budget concerns throughout the year. Facilitates plans for the construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings. Serves as a permanent board member of the Houston Center for Literacy and as a permanent member of the Harris County Public Library Leadership Innovation Team; and works closely with the Harris County Friends Council and with other library volunteer groups.

Minimum Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library education program, plus
seven years of experience in a multibranch public library system with a minimum of five years of progressive responsible experience in administration, management, supervising and leading staff. Experience as a library director, deputy director or assistant director is required. Experience building and renovating libraries is highly desirable.
Salary: Up to $133,824, depending on qualifications.
