Description of Institution and Library

To enable these accomplished students, faculty, and staff to create, disseminate, and apply knowledge for the benefit of global society, the UCLA Library is re-envisioning how it is acquired, synthesized, and shared across academic audiences and with the public. It was among the first academic libraries to develop subject-specialist librarians and to launch a program to enhance students’ research skills. Its Special Collections pioneered the acquisition by public institutions of rare and unique books, children’s literature, pulp and detective fiction, works by or about women and minorities, screenplays, architectural plans, and Los Angeles-related materials and today leads the way in collecting archival resources in digital format such as emails and manuscripts. It has launched innovative data management services and an affordable course materials initiative that have served as models for other libraries.

The Library serves UCLA students, faculty, and staff whenever and wherever they need its resources and expertise. Reconfigured, high-tech spaces and services in its ten campus libraries enable users and librarians to explore and work with print and digital materials collaboratively or individually, pursue new lines of inquiry, and develop new pedagogical approaches as well as novel forms of scholarship. More than 3.5 million people visit annually, while an additional 3.4 million visitors enter online through its virtual front doors.

Whether on campus or online, the Library forms the intellectual heart of UCLA, a hub for cutting-edge discovery, scholarship, and instruction.

As a part of the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS), the Department of Information Studies (IS) offers the following academic programs: the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program, which has several specializations: Archival Studies, Informatics, Library Studies, Media Archival Studies, and Rare Books / Print and Visual Resources; the PhD program in Information Studies; and the Post-Master’s Certificate of Specialization in Information Studies. The IS Department has a current enrollment of approximately 140 students in the MLIS program and 35 PhD candidates.

The IS Department is committed to diversity and social justice, and seeks to develop leaders and innovators who will change institutions and solve problems related to the personal and social use of information. Many of the curricular and research initiatives of IS examine the ways in which nontraditional information resources are designed, created, evaluation, preserved, and used, and the ways in which historically underserved groups gain access to information systems and services. All IS students are encouraged to challenge accepted ideas and to actively explore new areas of knowledge within the mission of the Department and its commitment to issues of social justice across the practices of information studies.

Position Duties
The UCLA Department of Information Studies seeks applications/nominations for the position of Director, Master of Library and Information Science Program (DMLISP).

Reporting to the Chair of the IS Department, and working in consultation with IS faculty members, the GSE&IS’s Offices of Student Services (OSS) and External Relations (OER), the Director, Master of Library and Information Science Program (DMLISP) creates and implements multidimensional strategic and tactical plans to maintain and expand program excellence, to enhance the student experience, and to ensure that UCLA’s MLIS program remains innovative and relevant to the developing marketplace for holders of the Master of Library and Information Science degree. The DMLISP directs strategic planning in support of a sustainable MLIS program that leads the field in its multiple areas of strength; continuous review and optimization of the MLIS curriculum and course offerings; ongoing evaluation of communications with and outreach to multiple stakeholder groups (potential applicants, applicants, incoming students, continuing students, alumni, internship site supervisors, potential employers, employers, etc.); coordination of IS faculty and staff members’ input to recruitment, admissions, and retention strategies; the design and implementation of procedures to improve student outcomes; and the delivery of high-quality classroom, internship, and professional development experiences.

The DMLISP serves as an ex-officio member of the IS faculty’s Admissions, Awards, and Recruitment Committee (AARC), Instructional Services Committee (ISC), and Professional Programs Committee (PPC). The DMLISP is expected to serve as a course instructor as needed, and to lead or consult on special projects as identified by the Department Chair. The DMLISP may assume responsibility for the hiring, training, and supervision of one or more part-time assistants.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

·        Conducts ongoing and systematic review of the MLIS curriculum, specialization areas, course offerings, emerging trends in hiring, and requirements for core competencies in the field.
·        Provides consultation for MLIS students’ academic and professional support needs.
·        Supplements individual faculty–student advising relationships with professional mentoring, formal and informal cohort-building activities, and skills development.
·        Delivers high-quality instruction and professional development opportunities for MLIS students, through teaching in formal course offerings, short courses, workshops, informal programs, etc.
·        Collects and tracks data on applicants to the MLIS program, current students, and alumni, for informational, analytical, and strategic planning purposes.
·        Surveys alumni and gathers systematic data on job placement, salaries, and other post-graduation outcomes.
·        Researches comparable graduate programs offered nationally and internationally, and recommends aspects of other programs (requirements, resources, course offerings, diversity and inclusion efforts, etc.) for incorporation into UCLA’s.
·        Conducts ongoing strategic and structural review of the IS Department’s professional internship and fieldwork program.
·        Maintains effective partnerships with existing internship sites and MLIS-holding supervisors.
·        Identifies and liaises with new sites and projects as opportunities arise.
·        Cultivates donor and funding agency contacts, and identifies grants, funders, and other forms of support for students and programmatic activities.
·        Seeks out, forges, and maintains strong partnerships with campus units and regional collaborators that can support the IS Department’s educational mission and contribute to students’ intellectual and professional development.
·        Provides support for periodic external evaluation and accreditation.
·        Acts as a liaison between the IS Department and UCLA Library, UCLA Center for Digital Humanities, and other units on campus that provide support for related teaching and research.
·        Acts as a liaison between the IS Department and appropriate professional associations (e.g., ALA, SAA, ASIS&T).
·        Represents the IS Department as a participant or presenter at appropriate annual meetings, conferences, and symposia.
·        Conducts continuous review of the IS Department’s communication channels, and designs and implements a comprehensive communication plan in support of the Department’s strategies and priorities.
·        Ensures that the Department’s website, promotional materials, factsheets, etc., are up to date, of professional quality, and working in service of the Department’s vision and strategic goals.
·        Identifies and implements effective strategies for recognizing students’ active participation, leadership, and achievements in the professional community.
·        Enhances strategic connections between the MLIS program and its alumni community: leverages alumni connections for recruitment, program promotion, internships and service learning requirements, alumni-focused events, etc.
·        Works with faculty and staff to streamline, centralize, and effectively distributes administrative responsibilities for improved accountability and operational transparency.
·        Conducts continuous review of new student recruitment, admissions, and orientation procedures, and makes recommendations for improvement of procedures in support of program requirements.
·        Drafts, updates, reviews, and standardizes internal documentation and program materials such as Student Handbook, Faculty Handbook, syllabi and course summaries, required forms, etc.
·        Creates and maintains a comprehensive program calendar with academic-year milestones and key annual/quarterly deadlines.

Required Qualifications
·        ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
·        Minimum three to five years of professional experience.
·        Knowledge of hiring trends, employment markets, internship opportunities, career prospects, etc., for graduates of Master’s level degree programs in library and/or information science.
·        Knowledge of curricular trends, core competencies, specialization areas, course offerings, etc., in Master’s-level degree programs in library and/or information science.
·        Ability to work creatively, adaptively, and effectively, both as a team member and independently, and to promote teamwork among colleagues.
·        Demonstrated supervisory experience.
·        Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills.
·        Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to communicate and collaborate effectively and confidently with faculty, students, staff, and other professionals.
·        Excellent teaching skills.
·        Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace, and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.
·        Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publications, etc., in some aspect of library and/or information science.

General Information
Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. Librarians at UCLA are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This is a represented position. They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans in addition to other benefits. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Appointees to the librarian series at UC shall have professional backgrounds that demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and flexibility. Such background will normally include a professional degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program. In addition to professional competence and quality of service within the library in the primary job, advancement in the librarian series requires professional involvement and contributions outside of the library, and/or university and community service, and/or scholarly activities.
