The UNC Health Sciences Library seeks a collaborative, proactive, and service-oriented Community Outreach and Global Health Librarian to collaborate with a variety of state-wide and University health outreach and research projects. Working both as a team member and independently, the Librarian will be integral in building relationships with practitioners, researchers, staff, and students. The person in this position is part of a team of librarians, support staff, and library partners working to achieve the library's mission to manage information and knowledge to advance health and health care.

Methods of engagement include: effective and innovative client-centered education and knowledge management services using a variety of methods and technologies both in client settings and in the library; individual and group consultations on information discovery, retrieval and management; and design and creation of global health resource products focused on the needs of specific user populations.

The position reports to the Assistant Director for Information Access & Discovery.

Primary Responsibilities

Partners with UNC global health projects to support global health research, teaching, and service

·        Identifies needs, plans and provides information and education services to support evidence-based practice in global health projects.
·        Builds relationships with global health practitioners, researchers, and students working on global health projects.
·        Identifies and participates in regional and campus-wide global health meetings and conferences.
·        Conducts in-depth expert literature searches as requested to support global health research, teaching, and service.
·        Assists global health research teams in managing information and data across the research lifecycle by consulting on grant seeking, data management plans, data visualizations, presentations, posters, and scholarly publication.
·        Assesses and shares information specific to global health needs with library staff and administration.
·        Recommends collection purchases that support global health research, teaching, and service.
·        Designs and implements appropriate assessment of global health services provided.
·        Identifies sources of funding to support the library’s global health outreach and research.

Seeks opportunities to provide health literacy training to health professionals in rural and underserved communities in North Carolina

·        Presents patient literacy concepts to health professionals and students working in community hospitals, health centers, and primary care practices throughout the state.
·        Uses the library’s curricula for teaching health professionals how to write materials adhering to best practices for health literacy and how to use methods for communicating with patients.
·        Consults with health professionals and students on methods for improving patient communication.

Provide public community workshops in NC rural and underserved communities:

·        Promotes HSL’s role in developing and promoting consumer health resources through community presentations, professional conferences, and collaboration with community groups.
·        Teaches classes on consumer health topics, e-health, and the evaluation of Internet resources.
·        Contributes to the continuing development of NC Health Info using information on community needs gathered through workshops.
·        Conducts outreach projects and develops a plan for using evaluative tools and measures to assess effectiveness of project.

Professional Development

·       Participates in education programs to build subject domain knowledge and to stay current with relevant information management tools and data sources specific to global health, particularly in subjects relevant to current outreach assignments.

Supports cross-functional communication and accomplishment of Library goals

·        Participates in department and library-wide meetings, committees, educational offerings and other library groups as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or related advanced degree
·        Minimum of one-year post-degree relevant professional experience
·        Experience with needs assessment and priority setting in the development of services for interdisciplinary outreach projects
·        Ability to provide expert in-depth information searches in a wide range of academic databases and other sources. Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources
·        Demonstrated knowledge of teaching and learning methods for adult learners
·        Excellent oral, written, analytical and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to multitask and set priorities in a dynamic environment
·        Demonstration of a commitment to professional development and service through publication and/or active membership in professional organizations
·        Commitment to supporting a diverse user population and evidence of working collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse group of colleagues
·        The ability to travel domestically and internationally for extended periods of time, as assigned

·        Experience in an academic health sciences library, hospital library, or other health-related library setting.
·        Experience in global settings such as service outreach, study abroad, etc.
·        Experience working with underserved or rural populations
·        Experience, certification, or degree in health informatics, public health, nursing, or other healthcare or global development-related field
·        Experience using technology to deliver information services and instruction at the point of need, particularly in global settings
·        Experience participating as a member of a systematic review team
·        Knowledge of funding sources and grant writing, data management plans, and data visualization
·        Conversational competency in a second language

Salary and Benefits
This is an At Will Appointment, contingent upon the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
