The Library System consists of five area and four branch libraries, Mobile Library Services, and Library Administrative offices. General State of Duties          
Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, August 6, 2018.

Manages the day-to-day operations, programming and collection of an assigned public service area at an assigned location; provides first line supervision of Library Public Services Specialists and other Library staff at an assigned location; does related work as required.

Essential Duties          
Henrico County Public Libraries seeks a Public Services Supervisor to lead an Information Services Department of a large area library. Current vacancies include openings in both Adult and Teen Services at our Fairfield location and in Teen services at our Libbie Mill location. A new Fairfield Area library is expected to open in 2019. This position oversees staff, reference services, readers advisory, public computing, classes and programming, book discussions, and outreach services to library users and the local community. This posting may be used to fill additional Public Service Supervisor positions in various service areas (Adults, Teens/Digital Media, or Children's) at other locations throughout the library system.

Requirements for the Adult Services Supervisor position include: experience working as an adult services librarian; planning and providing programs and outreach; and, extensive knowledge of literature, library and information science. Ability to inspire superior performance from staff; ability to evaluate performance and develop staff; ability to write and speak effectively; ability to work as part of a team; ability to resolve difficult interactions with library users; a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge of trends in library service; awareness of and ability to learn new technologies; and strong planning and organizational skills. Considerable knowledge of library organization, procedures, and policies; considerable knowledge of reference sources and managing materials in multiple formats; ability to plan and schedule; ability to effectively train and supervise staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with the general public. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Serves on the Adult Services Committee and other system-wide committees. Works closely with the Adult Services Coordinator and area and cluster branch staff to plan and implement service priorities. Works closely with the supervisory team to ensure that HCPL and Henrico County standards of customer service are met and to ensure smooth operation of the facility. May act as Person in Charge in the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager.

Requirements for the Teen Services/Digital Media Lab Supervisor include: experience working with teens in a library setting; planning and providing teen programs and outreach; extensive knowledge of young adult literature, library and information science, and teen development as it related to library service; experience working with digital media hardware and applications; planning and providing digital media programs; extensive knowledge of digital media uses as they relate to library service. Ability to inspire superior performance from staff; ability to evaluate performance and develop staff; ability to write and speak effectively; ability to work as part of a team; ability to resolve difficult interactions with library users; a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge of trends in teen and digital media services and general library service; awareness of and ability to learn new technologies; and strong planning and organizational skills. Considerable knowledge of library organization, procedures, and policies; considerable knowledge of reference sources and materials; ability to plan and schedule workloads; ability to effectively train and supervise staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with the general public. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Serves on the Teen Librarians Committee and Digital Media Committee. Works closely with the Youth Services Coordinator, IT Coordinator and cluster branch teen services contacts to plan and implement service priorities. Works closely with the supervisory team to ensure that HCPL and Henrico County standards of customer service are met and to ensure smooth operation of the facility. May act as Librarian in Charge in the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager.

Requirements for the Children's Services Supervisor include: experience working with children and families in a library setting; planning and providing programs and outreach; extensive knowledge of children's literature, library and information science, and child development as it relates to library service. Ability to inspire superior performance from staff; ability to evaluate performance and develop staff; ability to write and speak effectively; ability to work as part of a team; ability to resolve difficult interactions with library users; a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge of trends in children's services and general library service; awareness of and ability to learn new technologies; and strong planning and organizational skills. Considerable knowledge of library organization, procedures, and policies; considerable knowledge of reference sources and materials; ability to plan and schedule workloads; ability to effectively train and supervise staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with the general public. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Serves on the Children's Management Committee. Works closely with the Youth Services Coordinator and cluster branch children's services contacts to plan and implement service priorities. Works closely with the supervisory team to ensure that HCPL and Henrico County standards of customer service are met and to ensure smooth operation of the facility. May act as Librarian in Charge in the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager.
Minimum Qualifications          
Master of Library Science degree and three (3) years of relevant library work experience, with two years of relevant supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

Possession of a Librarian's Certification from the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians is required.

May require a valid driver's license to perform assigned duties at various locations.

Night and weekend work is required.
