Suggestions for Celebrating
Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros

Basic

• Mark this day on your calendar of events today!

• Plan early.

• Check out the following websites for ideas: REFORMA Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros (http://clnet.ucr.edu/library/reforma/resources/ninos/dia.html) and Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros Web site at the Texas State Library (http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/ninos/index.html)

• Develop a bookmark of recommended read-aloud books

• Contact the pastor of the local church or congregation. Ask him or her to help you publicize your event in the church bulletin.

• Enjoy the rewards of seeing children sharing their reading delights with their families.

Intermediate

• Purchase additional Spanish and bilingual material for your collection for children and adults. Make sure they are available on the day of your big event.

• Invite a children’s folklore dance group from a neighboring school to perform

• Invite a local storyteller to share community stories with children and their parents

• Make sure to publicize the event in English and Spanish throughout the Latino community: grocery stories, Laundromats, churches, schools, etc.

• Take lots of pictures of your event

• Archive the event with the National REFORMA archivist, Sal Güereña
(guerena@library.ucsb.edu)

• Contact the local RIF (Reading is Fundamental) coordinator: ask them to consider this event and your branch as a site for a RIF book distribution.

• Find the local chapter of the National Association for the Education of the Young Child  (http://www.naeyc.org ). Ask them to consider sponsoring their annual children’s fair on April 30th, or on the closest Saturday. Use that Saturday as a day to launch community awareness for April 30th.

• Find out the the local Americorps coordinator in your community. Are any of them working in the schools or on family literacy projects? Ask them to volunteer their services on Día de los Libros as part of their National Service Day.

• Approach your local McDonalds restaurant. They frequently provide free refreshments for selected children’s events.

• Contact the local grocery chain store. Talk with the manager about providing free refreshments and/or publicity in their store for your event.

• Contact the local panadería. Ask them to provide pan de dulce for the event. Ask them for permission to put up posters and flyers for the event.

Advanced

• Plan a family literacy fair or other special event at a neighborhood branch or central library on April 30th; or choose another day prior to the 30th to launch a week-long series of events culminating on April 30th.

• Invite a children’s author and/or illustrator to come to the library on that day. Suggested authors include the Pura Belpré Award Winners. Involve all members of the community in your celebration.

• Find a senior citizens’ center that is willing to allow elementary, junior high, or high school students to record the seniors’ childhood stories. Get the students to write these histories, and have them present the stories in book form. Hold a special event to honor the students and the senior citizens for their efforts.

• Contact the local Spanish-language radio station. Who is the most popular DJ in the community? Ask him or her to help you promote Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros by urging their listeners to read to their children and take them to the public library. Ask them to promote any activities you have planned for that event. Invite the radio station to broadcast live from the library on that day.

• Set up a meeting with the editorial board of a popular local television station. Ask them to consider running a series on early childhood brain development as well as on the importance of reading aloud. Ask a well-known TV broadcaster to be the honorary chair for your event.

• Contact the bilingual coordinator of the local school district. Find out what the local school district is doing for family literacy in your targeted schools. Invite them to co-sponsor this event.

• Work with local National Association for Bilingual Education members, usually bilingual teachers in the local school district.

• Contact and collaborate with the local chapter of MANA (http://www.hermana.org/), a Latina advocacy and leadership organization

• Visit the National Latino Children’s Institute website: http://www.nlci.org/. Are there NLCI plans for Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros activities in your community? Offer to collaborate with them to promote a children’s fair or other event in the school or public library that promotes reading and book

• Contact your area’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Ask them to become your corporate sponsor for the event.
