In 1996, René Bue graduated from UW-Madison with a BS double major in Psychology and Latin American Iberian Studies. She also received a certificate in Chicano Studies. At that time, she never imagined she would be working in a library...although the library has always been one of her favorite places.
René Bue is the full-time Programming and Outreach Coordinator at Hedberg Public Library (HPL) in Janesville, WI. Until January 2014, she had worked as the part-time Bilingual Outreach Coordinator. Ms. Bue continues to focus on working with the Spanish speakers in her community but has also expanded her role to include programming and outreach for a wide variety of people.
Besides working at the library, Ms. Bue is also a freelance interpreter/translator who works with a lot of local agencies to make sure that Spansih speakers are receiving services in their native language. She also served as President of the Latino Service Providers Coalition in Rock County for 6 years.
As an advocate for Latinos...and all people...Ms. Bue realizes the importance and value of partnerships in the community. It is through the partnerships she has developed in the community that she is able to offer a wide variety of programming at the library such as English as a Second Language classes, one-on-one computer classes in Spanish, Noche de cuentos (at a local elementary school), Día de los niños/Día de los libros, Día de los muertos workshop to learn how to make ofrendas and sugar skulls, Posadas and many more! Library users from all over southern Wisconsin come to these programs so that they can share their traditions and culture with their children.
Collection development is also very important to René Bue. Her love of Latin American literature has helped her to be able to include materials from all over Latin America in both the adult and juvenile Spanish collections. This is particularly important since there are Latinos from every Latin American country living in Rock County, Wisconsin. Ms. Bue knows the importance of having the materials reflect the population that is served by Hedberg Public Library. This includes, not only Spanish speakers in Rock County, but also fromt he surrounding counties. Many Latinos have come to HPL from other counties because of the extensive Spanish collection the library has.
Ms. Bue has presented at all of the Wisconsin Library Association annual conferences and Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries conferneces since she started working at HPL in 2007. She teaches others how to offer relevant and culturally correct programming and how to do collection development of Spanish language materials. René also has presented to the SLIS studnets at UW-Madison on the same topics. She also recently rewrote the curriculum for the UW-Madison Spanish for the Library online course.
If elected as the REFORMA Chapter Representative, René Bue will continue to advocate for Spanish speakers to ensure that libraries continue to offer services, programming and materials in Spanish. She will continue to educate non-Latino library staff about the diversity and beauty of the Latino community and how advocating for the Spanish speakers in their own communities can help to enrich the lives of everyone who lives there.
