Lisa Sánchez González's most recent book, "The Stories I Read to the Children" (CUNY, Centro Press 2013), documents the life and writing of Pura Belpré, a pioneer children's librarian at the NYPL and the first known Latina and Afro-Caribeña children's author in mainstream U.S. publishing history. In the spirit of Belpré, Sánchez's current research and writing agenda revolves around keeping Caribbean folklore and storytelling traditions alive and well in print (and circulation); she has recently finished writing a bilingual collection of short stories entitled "Puerto Rican Folktales/Cuentos folclóricos puertorriqueños" (2Leaf Press, forthcoming 2014), and is busy this summer at home in the Enchanted Forest (it does exist!) writing another volume of stories.
The author of "Boricua Literature: A Literary History of the Puerto Rican Diaspora" (NYU Press, 2001) and a myriad of essays on American and Caribbean literary history, Lisa Sánchez González currently teaches at UCONN, where she is an Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature.
Lisa will be appearing at 2 Sunday REFORMA Programs (and she will be at the Gala!)
