Gail Borden Public Library (GBPL) of Elgin, IL, partnered with the local U-46 School District’s Dual Language program and its Bilingual Parents Advisory Council (BPAC) to celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros, Children’s Day/Book Day with a week of simultaneous virtual programming on both the GBPL and BPAC Facebook pages on April 26-30, 2021.

Many events were recorded and can be seen on the library’s YouTube page,
 and the BPAC Facebook page.

This library/school partnership has been active for many years. At the Monday opening event, the School District U-46 Dual Language Program Director recognized the Library for supporting bilingualism and engaging the students and their parents in literacy activities all year round. The Día programs were successful and have received over 3000 views! Families who submitted photos or videos of their participation were entered in a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. Another happy outcome of this week was that the BPAC leadership held a monthly meeting the week after the event and were thrilled to have new parents who had participated in the Día de los niños events now interested in joining their group. It was a fun and rewarding week which culminated in a concert by children’s musician and author MISTER G. Many thanks to REFORMA for the mini-grant award which went toward his fee.
