Feeling the salsa beat and rhythm from their head to their toes, a young girl and her mother put on their best dresses and dancing shoes to salsa dance throughout the barrio. As the duo make their way to the park where Papi is playing salsa notes, various neighbors and community figures trail them. Cofer’s concepts are simple, fun, and pleasing; and the saturated and colorful illustrations of Rodriguez capture the happy, vibrant mood. English and Spanish phrases work well together in the text, but, overall, there are simply too many words, too much repetition, and too many details. However, the book does succeed in demonstrating how music can bring a community together. Additional Selection.
