Abigail Morales is the Presidenta of the Libros Chapter and Librarian for San Diego County Public Libraries

The first months of this new presidential year the San Diego Chapter of Reforma, LIBROS has seen many noteworthy highlights and creation of ideas reaching beyond the near horizon to reach for the heavens.

  • October 5, 2012-Libros/Reforma Board Meeting and Annual Mixer was held at the Encinitas Community Room in the Encinitas Library. This was a wonderful way to meet current board members and extend our chapter efforts into the new presiding year.  Photographs from the event are shared and posted on our facebook page.

Multiple academic scholarships will be announced and given during these ceremonies throughout the day.

  • Friday, October 19, 2012-Representatives from the San Diego Chapter and the Los Angeles Chapter attended the 7th Annual Baja Library Association Conference.  The keynote speaker for this year was our own San Diego County Library Director, Jose Aponte.  La Asociación de Bibliotecarios de Baja California VII JORNADA BIBLIOTECOLOGICA DE BAJA CALIFORNIA

The Association for Librarians from Baja California at the Xochicalco University in the city of Tijuana, BC.

  • The themes and sessions from this conference raised awareness and strategies for improving services and reach across the borders between Mexico and the United States.
  • November 9, 2012- Skyped Libros Board Meeting Discussion of selecting relationships in the local print community to better nurture and share information about grants/scholarships, events of interest to the Spanish speaking communities for greater knowledge and public engagement.
  • November 16, 2012-Libros Scholarship Sub-Committee formed for the conception and execution of a perennial academic scholarship for $1,000. The naming of this scholarship is to be announced.  List serves and social media will be used for the advertisement of these opportunities for those prospective students in Library Science and Information.
  • December 8, 2012Celebration of Life and the Grand Opening of the new Lincoln Acres Library.  Multiple academic scholarships will be announced and given during these ceremonies throughout the day.  Activities for the whole family celebrate the promise of a young man’s life lost to random violence in the community.  San Diego County’s mission is to create safe sanctuaries in the libraries we build and hold open for our children and families.  Libros board members will participate and represent our commitment to serve the Spanish speaking community.
  • 2nd Annual Reforma So Cal Chapters Meeting at the Oceanside Public Library.  Mixer hosted at the nearby, La Bella Tapatia Taqueria for $10/ person.  All proceeds from the evening’s auction will contribute to Libros’ Scholarships.
  • January 25-28, 2013Current President, Abigail Morales and past President, Patrick Sullivan will attend ALA Midwinter Conference and Exhibits 2013 in Seattle, Washington
