REFORMA Announces 2020-2021 Scholarships Recipients

The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking (REFORMA) and the REFORMA Scholarship Committee are pleased to announce their 2020 selections for the REFORMA Scholarships:

Patricia Lyons has been awarded the Rose Treviño Scholarship. Patricia is a student at the University of North Carolina and resides in Charlotte, NC. She currently works at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as a library assistant.

Amanda Toledo has been awarded the REFORMA Scholarship. Amanda is a student at the University of Washington and resides in Pasadena, CA. She has worked supporting Latinx and Spanish speakers as a library associate in Altadena, California.

Hope Saldivar has been awarded the REFORMA Scholarship. Hope is a Student at San Jose State University and resides in Davis, CA. She is a solo employee as a Library Associate of the Yolo County, CA Knight Landing branch, a predominantly rural area.

REFORMA supports the active recruitment of bilingual and bicultural librarians to meet the information needs of the Spanish-speaking community. The REFORMA Scholarship provides financial assistance to encourage and enable Latinos and/or Spanish speakers to pursue or advance a career in Library and Information Science. The Rose Treviño Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of a children's librarian at heart who dedicated her career to serving Hispanic communities. Treviño passed away in 2010 at the age of 58.

Established in 1971 as an affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA), REFORMA has actively sought to promote the development of library collections to include Spanish-language and Latino oriented materials; the recruitment of more bilingual and bicultural library professionals and support staff; the development of library services and programs that meet the needs of the Latino community; the establishment of a national information and support network among individuals who share our goals; the education of the U.S. Latino population with regard to the availability and types of library services; and lobbying efforts to preserve existing library resource centers serving the interests of Latinos.
