REFORMA and ALA’s GNCRT presents a 1.5 hrs webinar exploring a myriad of topics highlighting the portrayal of Latinos in comic books. These include the rich mixed ethnic and cultural backgrounds of characters in comic books, stereotypes in Latino portrayals, and publishing and translation issues. Additionally, panelists will share highlights of work between REFORMA and the GNCRT to publish a joint booklist!

Frederick Luis Aldama, aka Professor Latinx, is the Jacob & Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas, Austin, where he is also founder and director of the Latinx Pop Lab, the annual BIPOC PoP: Comics, Gaming & Animation Arts Expo & Symposium, and Editor-in-Chief of the Latinx Pop Magazine. He is an award-winning author, co-author, editor, and co editor of dozens of books and editor of over 45 books and over 10 book series, including Latinographix and Brown Ink that publish Latinx graphic fiction and nonfiction. He is the producer and co-creator of the first documentary on Latinx comic book superheroes He is author of several children’s books, including The Adventures of Chupacabra Charlie (published in English and Spanish) and Con Papá / With Papá as well as producer and co-creator of the animation short, Carlitos Chupacabra (Cannes Animation Selection 2023). He has been inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters and Ohio State University's Office of Diversity & Inclusion Hall of Fame. His recent comics and books include The Absolutely (Almost) True Adventures of Max Rodriguez, Labyrinths Borne, Pyroclast, and The Steampunkera Chronicles (forthcoming).
Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is an award-winning graphic novelist of the critically acclaimed and bestselling superhero series La Borinqueña that is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum. Via sales of La Borinqueña, over $200,000 has been raised for the La Borinqueña Grant Awards that support nonprofits in Puerto Rico. He has published La Borinqueña books in collaboration with DC Comics and NRDC and is launching an action-figure line of his superhero characters. As the Creative Director and owner of his studio Somos Arte, he has worked with such notable clients as Atlantic Records, Columbia University, Sony Pictures, and Marvel. "Arte de La Borinqueña" curated by Edgardo is touring across the U.S. and presently on exhibition at Chicago’s National Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Culture. He is also the recipient of a Mellon Foundation fellowship to support the continued publication of La Borinqueña. Jesús Cossio is the author of "RUPAY, HISTORIAS GRÁFICAS SOBRE LA VIOLENCIA POLÍTICA 1980 - 1984" (co-authored with Alfredo Villar and Luis Rossell), "BARBARIE - CÓMICS SOBRE LA VIOLENCIA POLÍTICA 1985 - 1990" and "LOS AÑOS DEL TERROR - 50 PREGUNTAS SOBRE EL CONFLICTO ARMADO INTERNO." "RUPAY" and "BARBARIE", which deal with the Peruvian internal conflict in the eighties and have been published in Spain, France, Austria, and Brazil. Jesus is also the author of the humor strip "LAS INCREIBLES AVENTURAS DEL HOMBRE QUE NO SE HACÍA DRAMAS" and "JOAQUÍN JAYME - UN ESCLAVO LIBERTO EN EL PERÚ DEL SIGLO XIX" which deal with Peruvian slavery in the nineteenth century.
Jesus Cossio has been invited to comic festivals in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and the United States. He has worked as a drawing teacher for the Comic Strip Contest on Memory organized by the Peruvian High Level Multisectoral Commission for Reparations. He is currently working with a team to develop the project RETRATOS DE MEMORIA, in which he draws portraits based on the testimonies and photographs of direct relatives of those who disappeared during the internal armed conflict in Peru. Ashley Robin Franklin is a queer cartoonist and illustrator based in Austin, Texas, where she lives with her partner and two goofy tiny dogs. Ashley's originally from the Rio Grande Valley (that's south South Texas), and attended college locally at UT-Pan American, majoring in English lit and minoring in Art. Ashley Robin makes sweet and spooky comics with horror and fantasy elements. She is the creator of several comics for adults published by the iconic indie publisher, Silver Sprocket, including Fruiting Bodies and That Full Moon Feeling. Her latest work, a YA graphic novel called The Hills of Estrella Roja, is a culmination of many of her lifelong interests and valued identities, taking inspiration from Mexican and Tejano folklore passed down from her mother, her own experiences as a queer person growing up in Texas, and her eternal love of paranormal stories. In her spare time, she loves painting and reading– mostly scary stories.
