Job Description
Cline Library Special Collections and Archives at Northern Arizona University seeks a forward-thinking, collaborative, and innovative Archivist for Digital Programs.

Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives, the Archivist for Digital Programs leads the continuing development of a maturing digital archives program, establishing and implementing policies and procedures for the management of born-digital and digitized materials that are informed by pragmatic application of professional standards.

The Archivist for Digital Programs will be a leader and collaborative practitioner in the following programmatic areas: digital asset management, digital production, access to born-digital and digitized content, content management systems, digital forensics, and preservation of digital objects and their related systems. This position supervises digital production, including the management of workflows, benchmarks, best practices, policies, metadata schema, storage solutions, preservation, equipment, and technology.

The Archivist for Digital Programs will support the strategic directions of Special Collections and Archives (SCA), the Cline Library and Northern Arizona University. The successful candidate must enjoy working in a nimble, innovative, collaborative, and fast-paced environment. The Archivist for Digital Programs will also lead and/or participate in collaborative digital projects with regional and national libraries, archives, and cultural organizations.

Special Collections and Archives has been a national leader in using technology to preserve and provide access to its collections for nearly 20 years. The collections are particularly strong in the areas of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, regional Native American history, land use and development, business activities, politics, and the greater northern Arizona region. The University Archives serve as the institutional memory of Northern Arizona University since its inception as Northern Arizona Normal School in 1899.
Responsibilities Include:
Oversee SCA’s content management system containing a growing collection of more than 115,000 digital objects, including managing future migrations.
Organize responsibilities and make decisions related to digital object management using the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model, including tracking, annotation, management, metadata, storage, preservation, retrieval and dissemination of digital objects.
Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital preservation strategy that includes policies, procedures, preservation management software platforms (e.g. Archivematica) and digital forensics tools (BitCurator).
With department staff, assess digital programs using the Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) audit guidelines and recommend improvements.
Collaborate with library and university stakeholders to expand and enhance the university’s institutional repository (OpenKnowledge@NAU) and provide guidance on the effective management of related research data.
Work with archivists, university administrators and staff to develop workflows, procedures, and best practices for transferring born digital institutional records.
Manage and oversee Special Collections and Archives website.
Supervise classified staff engaged with tasks related to digital production.
Collaborate with librarians and university faculty to incorporate digital SCA content into courses, and to provide course instruction and research consultations.
·        Ability and willingness to travel.

Minimum Qualifications

ALA-accredited graduate degree from a library or information science program or equivalent graduate degree in a relevant field (archives, records management, museum studies, management of cultural heritage collections, etc.).

·        At least two years’ work experience in digital archives or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of and experience applying strategies adopted by the archival community for managing born-digital archival material.
Knowledge of and experience using digital asset management systems, tools, and procedures that support a robust and complex digital archives program.
Knowledge and application of relevant metadata standards for digital preservation (METS and PREMIS) and descriptive metadata standards (DACS, EAD/EAC, and Dublin Core).
Experience developing policies and procedures that inform and shape a robust and growing digital archives program.
Experience with digital management workflows, best practices, metadata schema, and standards for the effective and active administration of born-digital and digitized objects.
Experience with tools and software used to capture, manage, and deliver non-active born-digital records, such as forensic hardware and BitCurator.
Digital Archives Specialist certification through the Society of American Archivists.
Experience in and a strong commitment to outstanding customer service in a diverse and user-centered environment including demonstrated ability to work with diverse colleagues (internal and external) to build professional relationships.
Knowledge of the history, culture, and geography of the Colorado Plateau, Southwest, and Indigenous communities of this region.
·        Supervisory experience including evaluation and performance oversight.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.
Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Salary

$65,000 - $69,000 annually, depending on experience.
