POSITION: Data Visualization Specialist (two-year appointment)
SUMMARY: The University of Cincinnati Libraries seeks a creative and forward-thinking Data Visualization Specialist to develop a distinctive program of support in data visualization that enables innovations in both teaching and research. The Specialist will manage the Libraries' new Visualization Laboratory, a groundbreaking collaborative space with a large multi-screen visualization wall. The Specialist joins our creative and dynamic Researcher Services team, a cross-disciplinary group engaging faculty and students in the areas of data management and analysis, scholarly communications, GIS, and bio/informatics. Working with Researcher Services and others in research computing, digital scholarship and related campus units, the Specialist will serve as an expert consultant to our premier faculty and scholars on visual thinking and data visualization techniques and software. This is a full-time Administrative & Professional (A&P) position and a two-year appointment. RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY: Reports to and receives guidance from the Director of the Science & Engineering Libraries (SEL). Functional supervisor for student assistants as related to responsibilities. DUTIES 1. Develop and deliver scalable and data visualization services and resources, in collaboration with Research Services team members, Digital Scholarship Center staff, and others as appropriate. 2. Provide consultation to faculty, students, and other researchers on data visualization techniques, tools, and software. Employ best practices in developing sustainable and assessable services that support and enhance UC's teaching and research agendas. 3. Identify, leverage, and champion the optimal tools and technologies for data visualization. 4. Assist with outreach and promotion efforts to integrate data visualization into the broader campus ecosystem. 5. Manage the visualization laboratory space located in the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library. Create and maintain documentation on technology, tools, and best practices. Track usage, conduct assessments, and make recommendations for technology and space enhancements. 6. Design and deliver workshops and trainings on visualization tools and techniques. Develop instructional materials and e-learning modules. 7. Assist with broader researcher services initiatives, including support for research data management, GIS, informatics, and big data. 8. Provide backup for operational duties in the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library as necessary, including assistance with user questions and library collections. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION 1. Bachelor's degree -OR- Associate's degree with two years of experience -OR- four years of experience; experience must be in graphic design, computer science, information science, data science, informatics, or related field. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. Experience utilizing a variety of data visualization tools and methods to create graphs, charts, timelines, maps, dashboards, infographics, etc. 2. Experience with digital research tools and digital research methods. 3. Highly self-motivated and able to deliver both independently and with strong team collaboration. 4. Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities. 5. Strong commitment to providing innovative and responsive service. 6. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely express complex work and ideas in everyday language. 7. Demonstrated ability to organize and plan work. 8. Prior experience in teaching or instruction. 9. Experience in an academic research setting. 10. Working knowledge of a scripting language such as Python or R. 11. Experience with statistical packages such as STATA, SPSS or SAS, or experience with geospatial analysis software. 12. Experience with data visualization software such as Tableau, D3.js, ggplot2 or Gephi. 13. Master's degree or other advanced degree in computer/information science or other relevant field in design or technology. 14. Physical requirements include frequent communications, verbal and written; frequent sitting and standing; visually or otherwise identify, observe and assess; and thinking analytically.
