Biology, Health, and Marine Sciences Collection Strategist/Bioinformatics Librarian Collection Development & Management Program

The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as our Biology, Health, and Marine (BHM) Sciences Collections Strategist/Bioinformatics Librarian (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Library’s Collection Development & Management Programs (CDM). The University of California San Diego Library is committed to supporting academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

Responsibilities of the Position
Biology, Health, and Marine Sciences Collection Strategist
•     Provides leadership and guidance in transforming the nature of collection development for the life and health sciences to include research data, born digital resources, and strategies that increase openness and access.
•     Oversees budget allocations and expenditures, including new continuation requests, for the Biology, Health, and Marine Sciences funds.
•     Guides, supports, shares information with, and provides collections related direction to Subject Librarians in Biology, Health, and Marine Sciences areas.
•     Collaborates with the Library’s Collections Strategy Team to develop, review, and assess innovative projects that improve the sustainability of the Library’s collection investments. Contributes to decision-making renewals, new title selections, and cancellations, on local and UC-wide licensed resources.
•     Representing subjects within the Biological, Health and Marine Sciences, actively participates in the Library’s Scholarly Communications initiatives to identify and assess open access investment options.
•     Responsible for the management planning for the physical collections in Biology, Health, and Marine Sciences areas. Serves as a member of the Library’s Collection Management Working Group to coordinates weeding and space-reduction projects for existing analog collections. Provides input and recommendations in managing physical collections in context of UC Shared Print Initiatives and other regional and national consortia.
•     Represents the Library on the UC Health & Life Sciences Common Knowledge Group. Collaborates on the selection, renewal, and assessment of shared licensed resources. In some cases, responsible for negotiating licensing terms and agreements for resources with publishers and other UC Libraries.

Subject Librarian for Bioinformatics
In support of campus Bioinformatics programs:
•     Serves as the primary contact and information resource on library services, resources, and policies.
•     Provides research consultation, reference, and instruction services to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, teaching and learning endeavors. Serves as a resource for information on data services, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship.
•     Develops collections to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the students and faculty.

•     Collaborates with Biological, Health, and Marine Sciences liaisons to support interdisciplinary undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers in finding, analyzing and managing data, and promoting library data services to the Bioinformatics programs.
