California State University, Dominguez Hills is seeking an enthusiastic, open-education advocate to join our growing team as the Open Educational Resources Librarian. For more information and to apply by March 22, 2018, please visit https://www.csudh.edu/hr/job-opportunities/ and find position #3249 under job opportunities.

Here are some quick answers to questions you might have about the position:

What is the official description for the job?
Our Open Educational Resources (OER) Librarian is a 12 month, tenure-track position (for serious!). This position is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and support for the library's open education efforts. You’ll continue running existing initiatives, like the CSU’s Affordable Learning Solutions, and develop new initiatives where needed. As the OER Librarian, you’ll help faculty adopt and create resources, assess our OER program, and develop partnerships across campus. All of the librarians at CSUDH are also liaison librarians, so you’ll have the opportunity to do some traditional research help, instruction, and collection services too.

Shorter version: Be our OER expert; develop OER partnerships; help faculty create, remix, and adopt OER materials; and contribute to our public services liaison team.

Why is working for the CSU so awesome?
Glad you asked! The California State University system is the nation’s largest and most affordable public four-year university system. We are the people’s university, so every day you get to make a difference, work in a diverse and inclusive environment, and foster intellectual growth. Plus, we have a strong faculty union, great benefits, exemplary leadership, a faculty committed to social justice, and motivated students.

Does this person lead OER initiatives or carry them out?
Both! We realize that it’s a tall order but know that all of the liaison librarians are here to support you and help develop relationships with other faculty in the colleges. Every DH librarian has a public liaison role, which includes teaching information literacy sessions and collaborating with faculty, but we also each have a functional role as well, coordinating programs and initiatives focused on information literacy, collections, or in your case, OER. You are the point person for these projects, but we all work collaboratively as our roles intersect. Hint, hint: you’ll probably be working with our Digital Initiatives Librarian on any OER publishing projects, our Student Success Librarian on documenting the role open materials play in student persistence, and (frankly) all of us in our liaison capacities as we spread the word to our faculty about OER.

Where is Dominguez Hills? I’ve never heard of it…
The land we’re on is named for the family of Juan Jose Dominguez, a Spanish soldier who received a grant of 75,000 acres for grazing cattle from the governor of the Spanish province of California in 1784. Prior to the Dominguez family, the first inhabitants of this land were the Gabrielino Indians. Today we call this place Carson, California, which is in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Still not ringing any bells? We’re not far from Long Beach. If you want to nerd out on our history, check it out here: http://www.csudh.edu/campus-history/ . If you prefer sports to history, you may be interested to note that the StubHub Center, home to the LA Galaxy and temporarily the LA Chargers, is right next door.

I didn’t take a typical path to librarianship. Should I still apply?
Definitely! We welcome people from all backgrounds as long as they too are committed to ensuring that the university and the library are welcoming and safe spaces where all can thrive, create, work, and learn. Even if you haven’t had a position just like this one before, if you have had other kinds of experiences with open educational resources and/or project management as well as a demonstrated commitment to service, like we do, you may well be a good fit!

What is the tenure process like at CSUDH?
Our retention, tenure, and promotion process is based on your librarianship role, scholarship, and service. You can see all our guidelines here: https://www.csudh.edu/Assets/csudh-sites/faculty-affairs/docs/rtp-definitions/university-library-rtp-2016.pdf [PDF]

What happened to the last person in the job?
Since its inception in 2010, the library and campus took the lead on the system-wide Affordable Learning Solutions initiative to support cost-effective solutions for our students. Over the past five years, the position was reduced to half-time, thereby diminishing the potential to work with faculty on OER solutions. We are excited about the links between open educational resources and student success. We’re in a hiring phase as the campus recovers from retirements and the 2008 recession. Come join our team and help us reimagine the CSUDH University Library!
