Duties & Responsibilities

Harvard University seeks a forward-thinking and collaborative professional to shape the strategic direction for the management of Harvard Library's physical collections, including storage, circulation, lending, and borrowing. The Director of Access Services leads, shapes, and oversees the work of staff engaged in providing services to the Harvard Library community to access research resources in many formats internally within the Harvard Library and externally with a range of partners and information suppliers.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Education, this role oversees the day to day management of and optimizes the operational effectiveness and costs of materials delivery, circulation, and storage throughout the Harvard Library. The Director is a key figure in the development of strategic partnerships with Ivy Plus members, ReCAP, and others, through development of policies, procedures, and programs, as well as through the execution of strategies for collective collection development.


The Director of Access Services will:
•     
Develop, set and assess the strategic direction for the storage, circulation, and collaborative lending and borrowing for the Harvard Library collection, in alignment with organizational priorities.
•     
Collaborate closely with library directors to deliver quality access services across Harvard's libraries designed around the diverse needs of the Harvard community. Serve on the Library Leadership Team as a head of one of Harvard Library's shared services.
•     
Lead a team of senior managers who are responsible for Circulation, Collection Management, Resource Sharing, Privileges and the Harvard Depository and be responsible for an Access Services staff of approximately 100 FTE deployed in more than 16 locations.
•     
Develop library-wide strategic directions for evolving local and offsite storage systems in the light of developing information technologies, increased digitization of materials, and collaborative lending and borrowing arrangements with peers.
•     
Provide oversight for the Harvard Depository, which is the University's local offsite, high-density storage facility. HD is equipped with 1.3 million linear feet of shelving specifically designed to accommodate books, records, microforms, and other media.
•     
Ensure efficient resource management and planning for the $14M annual Access Services budget including preparing short- and long-term operational, space and financial projections. Analyze metrics and provide reports and information on operations (e.g. accessioning activities, shelving, capacity, circulation, and growth projections for all formats requiring physical storage).
•     
Collaborate with library directors and Research, Teaching and Learning (RTL) colleagues regarding Access Services support for research services. Provide collaborative leadership in the evolution of access services and research services and the change management and skill development needed within the workforce.
•     
Ensure responsive, high-quality operations and implements innovative programs and technologies that promote enhanced services to meet the Library's storage, records management storage, service and circulation needs of patrons.
•     
Ensure the quality, integrity, and efficiency of all workflows and procedures, including materials transport through various assessment methods.
•     
Represent the Harvard Library in regional, national, and international associations, including, but not limited to ALA, ARL, Ivies+ and other access services-related groups.




Basic Qualifications
•     Bachelor's degree required with an advanced degree in Library Science or equivalent.
•     8 or more years of work experience relevant to the position.
•     A record of successful management and development of staff, especially through organizational and/or operational transitions.
•     A record of successful collaborative work in a complex or matrix environment, such as a consortium or multi-type library, where leadership by influence is required.
•     A record of successful management of large budgets in a complex funding structure.

Additional Qualifications
•     Knowledge of developing trends of collective collecting, shared print repositories, fulfillment, and the technologies to enable these efforts (e.g. Aeon, APIs).
•     Commitment to high quality user experiences, innovative services, and secure stewardship of collections.
•     An active record of professional engagement and ongoing professional development.
•     Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to inspire staff to share and achieve them.
