Each year, hundreds of new students and dozens of new faculty arrive at Harvard and begin exploring the richness and complexity of library resources. Many are surprised by the high-touch customized support available to them through Harvard Library. As students navigate the undergraduate and graduate curricula in different disciplines, their needs and expectations for library support can evolve dramatically. The process of connecting with departments on liaison and orientation activities requires a nuanced understanding of student and faculty experiences.

The Services for Academic Programs department includes close to 20 staff members and provides several services for FAS including departmental academic support, structured instruction, walk-in and appointment based assistance, orientations and tours, and online resources. The HLOS will join an active and dynamic department, and extend its work in liaison and orientation services.

The HLOS provides leadership for liaison and orientation programs provided directly by Harvard College Library and facilitates programs with other libraries that serve the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). Reporting to the Director of Learning and Teaching Services (DLTS) for the FAS Libraries, the HLOS joins a high-functioning team of managers and librarians who are engaged with pedagogy and digital scholarship support. As part of the team supporting the Associate University Librarian for Research and Education (AULRE), the HLOS collaborates with several units across the Harvard Library as well as individual departmental libraries.


The HLOS is expected to build on a strong foundation to:
•     Design, implement, assess and refine annual orientation programs for all new arrivals to FAS including faculty, undergraduates, graduate students and staff.
•     Lead, manage, support and assess the FAS Liaison Services program. Build strategic relationships for liaison activities with particular attention to matters that cross across departmental lines. Facilitate conversations with stakeholders to increase effectiveness of liaison services.
•     Lead services for the General Education undergraduate course requirement.
•     Directly supervise four to ten staff who may include research librarians, administrative staff and graduate students.

In collaboration with departmental colleagues, the HLOS is expected to:
•     Promote practices to support inclusion and belonging for the campus community
•     Support staff to increase proficiency in strategic areas such as digital scholarship, active learning, educational technology, online pedagogy, media literacy and learning design.
•     Building on current work, deepen school-wide relationships including with Freshman Seminars, Writing Program, Academic Technology Group / HUIT, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning and departmental chairs.
•     Support the work of the DLTS and AULRE in building relationships with FAS deans, chairs and senior faculty
•     Consult on planning purchases and budget development for the department.
•     Identify opportunities for new programs and services to deepen departmental impact.

Basic Qualifications
•     ALA accredited Master's degree in Library Science, Instructional Design or similar educational credentials which may include graduate degrees in educational technology, information science, pedagogy or learning science.
•     Six or more years of increasingly responsible professional experience in research instruction in a large academic library
•     Four or more years of teaching/instruction experience in higher education
•     Two or more years of supervisory experience and / or demonstrated experience leading a library or department, fostering teamwork and collaboration

•     Excellent written and oral communication
•     High level judgment and discretion, and comfort with ambiguity
•     Strategic thinking, negotiation and change management skills
•     Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•     Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate and negotiate effectively
•     Ability to work with users and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines
•     Ability to work with competing demands in a complex environment, and manage time effectively
•     A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
•     Knowledge of best practices in one or more of the high-demand areas mentioned above
