Dean of the Library


Northern Kentucky University (NKU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Library. Responsibilities:

The Dean is the chief administrator of the W. Frank Steely Library, reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Academic Affairs Council and Deans’ Council. The Dean provides vision, leadership and resources for an experienced and knowledgeable Library faculty (22) and staff (20) and the Center for Innovation and Technology in Education (CITE), the university’s academic technology unit. The Dean manages a budget of approximately $4 million; oversees and coordinates all library services, planning and fund raising, represents the University locally, regionally and nationally, and coordinates efforts to improve user access to materials through a variety of delivery options. The Dean provides leadership for Steely Library’s two academic programs, the Bachelor of Science in Library Informatics, and the Continuing Education Program in Library Science. The Dean also collaborates with the Friends of Steely Library by serving as a board member to support fund raising and development.

Qualities and Qualifications:

•     MLS from an ALA-accredited school (additional advanced degree desirable).
•     At least five years administrative experience, showing progressive successful responsibility in library administration (academic libraries preferred).
•     Demonstrated ability to develop, supervise, and maintain productive and collaborative relationships within the library and beyond and to foster this ability in others.
•     Demonstrated effective decision-making abilities.
•     Excellent oral and written communication skills.
•     Proven understanding of emerging technologies and directions in academic library management.
•     Successful budgetary management skills and experience with the development of private support.
•     Proven understanding of online learning and the support thereof.
•     Demonstrated understanding of the library's mission in a growing metropolitan university.
•     Demonstrated success in fund raising.
•     Record of scholarship and the ability to support the same in others.
•     Strong advocate for library amongst university campus and greater community.
•     Demonstrated ability to lead with a sense of humility, compassion, and transparency.   
•     Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and experience in achieving goals relative to inclusive excellence.

This position has faculty rank and is eligible for tenure at the level of Associate Professor or Professor.

Salary and benefit package is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
