Marin County Free Library:   The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato.

Library Assistants II provide day-to-day library services to patrons of all ages, including provision of basic reference and readers’ advisory, digital and information literacy instruction, and proactive customer service to enhance our ‘single desk’ model of service. Library Assistants II help lead improvement of branch materials handling; support programming, marketing and outreach to engage, empower and inspire Marin’s diverse communities; implement programs that help to close the academic achievement gap; and assign and review the work of some staff and volunteers. These positions are key to expanding innovative library services and 21st century learning.

These positions involve substantial interaction with children and teens and serve communities with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Library Assistants II in these positions will collaborate with school districts and community partners to anticipate and meet community needs.
The positions will include working Saturdays and may include working at least one evening per week.

Current Vacancies:   Full and part-time positions currently exist in the following library branches: Marin City (full-time, 75 hours biweekly), South Novato (part-time, 37.5 hours biweekly), Point Reyes (part-time, 55 hours biweekly).


Our Highly Qualified Candidate : The highly qualified candidate will have a strong interest and commitment in providing reference and readers’ advisory services in a public library setting; assigning and reviewing the work of lower level staff and volunteers; and training staff and volunteers in library policies and work procedures. In addition, the ideal candidate will work effectively in both independent and team environments; be able to apply strong organizational, planning, and problem solving skills in a rapidly changing environment; recognize and respect cultural differences; have a firm commitment to addressing equity issues and improving the educational outcomes for children; and be passionate and enthusiastic about public library service and recognize that the library is a place where information transforms lives.

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience assisting patrons in a public or academic library. College coursework in library sciences may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are highly desirable.

Special Requirements:   Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and at any branch as assigned.
