Duties & Responsibilities

Houghton Library, the primary repository for Harvard's rare books and manuscripts, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and motivated Head of Teaching and Learning. Reporting to the Associate Librarian for Public Services, this position coordinates Houghton Library's teaching and learning initiatives, including classroom instruction, Houghton Library's undergraduate fellowship program, January-term classes, and special collections-based digital scholarship, and takes a leading role in continuously enhancing and assessing learning environments to engage students and faculty with Houghton Library's distinctive special collections.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

•     
Coordinates the teaching program at Houghton Library, including, overseeing class requests, distribution of classes among Houghton curators, librarians, and archivists, and managing the Class Request Tool, and monitoring technology and supplies in library class spaces.
•     
Works across curatorial areas (Printing & Graphic Arts, Early Books and Manuscripts, Early Modern Books and Manuscripts, Modern Books and Manuscripts, and the Harvard Theatre Collection) to prepare and lead instruction sessions with primary source materials, including evaluating and selecting materials, developing class plans, and collaborating with faculty on assignment design and learning outcomes.
•     
Works with faculty and other campus partners to integrate Houghton collections and resources into curriculum, individual classes, and new and existing programs.
•     
Administers Houghton Library's undergraduate fellowship program, including promotion and recruitment, developing programming and goals for summer fellows, creating engaging workshops and cohort learning experiences, and serving as a mentor and coach for fellows.
•     
Partners with students, faculty, and librarians to enhance learning, teaching, and scholarship through application of new technologies and emerging digital pedagogy and research methods across disciplines, as well as critical engagement with library collections.
•     
Creates a framework for reflective teaching practices and a continuously improving instruction program. Provide support, consulting, training, and communications to Houghton library colleagues in order to promote best practices for primary source pedagogy, assessment, and to advance the teaching and learning mission of the library.
•     
Coordinates Houghton's January-term classes and programming, including promotion and publicity.
•     
Deepens teaching and learning collaborations across the University including with General Education, Freshman Seminars, Harvard College Writing Program, Academic Technology Group, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, the Summer Humanities and Arts Research Program (SHARP), and Harvard Library's Services for Academic Programs.
•     
Leads and coordinates Houghton participation in Harvard College student and family outreach events such as Opening Days and other pre-orientation programs, First-Year Family Weekend, Junior Family Weekend, and Visitas Weekend.

Basic Qualifications
•     Master's degree in library and/or information science or equivalent experience
•     Three or more years of professional experience in instruction and reference in an academic or research library environment
•     Knowledge of and experience in providing reference and instruction in rare books, manuscripts, or archives
•     Experience with research and teaching trends, methods, and best practices

Additional Qualifications
•     Second specialized advanced degree in a relevant discipline
•     Ability to manage complex projects and deliver to deadlines
•     Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work collegially and creatively within and across organizations
•     A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population
•     Strong customer service orientation and success in improving the user experience
•     Capacity to thrive in a changing working environment
•     Experience leading the design of a new program and/or service from concept through implementation
•     Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective collaborations with students, faculty, academic departments and/or academic support units, including working efficiently across disciplines and with diverse populations
•     Experience with assessment tools and methods
•     Excellent written and oral communication
•     High level judgment and discretion, and comfort with ambiguity
•     Strategic thinking, negotiation, and change management skills
•     Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•     Record of engagement with professional groups and activities and/or contributions to professional or scholarly literature
•     Working knowledge of one or more languages
