Harvard University seeks a creative, forward-thinking, and collaborative professional to shape the strategic direction for Digital Scholarship services in Harvard Library. The Digital Scholarship Program Manager leads and coordinates development of a robust and integrated set of programs and services that strengthen the library's role in supporting digital scholarship, digital literacy, digital pedagogy, and the use of digital collections and multimedia in research, teaching, and learning. The position is responsible for conducting ongoing needs assessment and engagement with the community and collaborating with numerous campus departments, within and outside the library community, to connect Harvard faculty, students, and staff to the strong but diffuse network of resources supporting digital scholarship (DS).

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Education, this role oversees and optimizes the operational effectiveness of DS support throughout the Harvard Library, with particular emphasis on the locations of Sackler, Lamont, and Cabot Libraries. A new Harvard Library Digital Scholarship Studio in the renovated Sackler building, reopening in 2019, will be an added node for front-facing teaching and consultation space for Harvard Library's programs, but the work of the staff supporting digital scholarship is expected to be agile, mobile, and responsive to user needs and locations. The incumbent will oversee development of policies and procedures; coordination and management of projects, budgets, and departmental workflow; and supervision of personnel and Digital Scholarship Studio operations. The Program Manager is a key figure in the development of strategic partnerships with Ivy Plus members and other strategic partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Digital Scholarship Program Manager will:
•     Provide leadership and coordination of innovative digital scholarship services, in alignment with organizational priorities.
•     Collaborate closely with library staff across Harvard's libraries to connect Harvard Library services and expertise, to enhance local school services where needed, and to facilitate scholarship across disciplines.
•     Lead a start-up unit in the Digital Scholarship Studio to ensure that needs for support with images are met, collaboration is supported, and that the equipment and staff of Sackler are deeply and appropriately tied to the resources of other libraries, facilities, and campus partners.
•     Deliver innovative consultation, research, and instructional services to the campus community in the areas of data-, image-, and/or computation-intense research.
•     Supervise the work of the image specialist and student workers. Works with other staff across departmental and divisional lines, notably the Librarian for Collections and Digital Scholarship and the Head of Digital Preservation. Works closely with the Harvard Library Research Data Program Manager to support data-centric research across the disciplines, including workshops, online learning objects, and course-connected instruction.
o     Develop and expand innovative digital scholarship services at Harvard, setting library-wide strategic directions for evolving needs within finite resources.
o     Establish an ongoing program of needs assessment, build relationships with core stakeholders, and provide outreach to faculty in particular to support the creation of impactful, effective, and sustainable digital scholarship and to nurture a community of practice. Establish an assessment plan for reporting and analyzing the effectiveness of digital scholarship efforts.
o     Collaborate with library colleagues regarding digital scholarship support for research services. Provide collaborative leadership in the evolution of services and the change management and skill development needed within the workforce.
o     Collaborate with a variety of others to strengthen library programs related to: digital collections, scholarly communications and open access publishing, the institutional repository, metadata services, and digital preservation to attend to the full life-cycle of digital research and its output.
o     Represent the Harvard Library in regional, national, and international associations, including, but not limited to ALA, ARL, Ivy Plus and other digital scholarship related groups.

Although this position will remain open until filled, applications will be reviewed beginning January 11, 2019.
Basic Qualifications

•     Advanced degree in Library Science or PhD as appropriate.
•     5+ years in an academic setting and 3 or more years of work experience relevant to the position, such as providing research support in academic libraries, producing digital scholarship, or developing relevant digital technologies.
•     Knowledge of developing technologies, standards, and best practices in digital scholarship, data services, and open publishing.
•     Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience working with digital scholarship tools and methodologies.
•     Demonstrated ability in project management (including planning, communication, and assessment) and setting priorities.

Additional Qualifications

•     Excellent interpersonal and multi-modal communication skills
•     Advanced degree or graduate study in an additional discipline
•     A record of successful management and development of staff.
•     Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
•     Commitment to high quality user experiences, innovative services, and secure stewardship of collections.
•     Demonstrated understanding of ethical and social issues in research data management, digital scholarship, and open publishing.
•     A record of successful collaborative work in a complex or matrix environment where leadership by influence is required.
•     Budget management experience; grant writing and management experience a plus.
•     Experience teaching in an academic library or higher education setting.
