Innovation and Entrepreneurship Librarian (temporary 2 year position)

The University of California, Irvine Libraries has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and collaborative professional to serve as the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Librarian (IEL). Nestled in the heart of Orange County, an ethnically diverse community which is one of the most vibrant hubs of innovation and business development in California, UCI is strategically committed to engagement with the community through the exchange of information, ideas, and resources.   To achieve this mission, the UCI Libraries is piloting an outreach effort to provide library research and instructional support to meet the growing demand across the University for services and resources that support innovation and entrepreneurship.   The ideal candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm, and fresh ideas to help launch this pilot effort.

Interested candidates from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, including early career librarians who are eager to contribute to this challenging new venture and who want to grow professionally through mentorship by a team of collaborative colleagues, are encouraged to apply.

Scope of the Position

The IEL will participate in a team, including the Research Librarian for Business and the Research Librarian for Applied Sciences and Engineering, which focuses on building relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners involved in innovation and entrepreneurship.   As part of the team, the IEL will explore and test ways to support multiple campus constituents, and will develop services and resources that support their endeavors to transform research and ideas into entrepreneurial ventures.

The IEL will provide research and instructional support for students and faculty in the Paul Merage School of Business , which recently launched a new Master of Innovation and Entrepreneurship program, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering , the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences , and other academic programs as needed. In addition the IEL will reach out to UCI’s ANTrepreneuer Center , which supports “UC Irvine students in starting new ventures” and UCI’s Applied Innovation , “a dynamic, innovative central platform for the UCI campus, entrepreneurs, inventors, the business community and investors to collaborate and move UCI research from lab to market.”

The IEL’s responsibilities will include advising users on navigating library resources that enable them to conduct market validation, develop informed business plans, assess the competitive market landscape, and discover patent information. In addition, the IEL will assist with instruction to classes and groups that have an innovation or entrepreneurship component, and will provide training for library staff on tools and techniques to assist patrons with reference questions.

As part of the team, the IEL will also explore the information landscape that supports innovation and entrepreneurship and advise on the Libraries’ collection strategies in this area. Finally, at the end of this two-year pilot, the IEL in conjunction with the team will contribute to a report that assesses the future viability of the Libraries’ support for innovation and entrepreneurship. As do all public service librarians in the UCI Libraries, the IEL will also participate in general reference and instruction programs.
