Under the direction of the Collections Services Archivist/Processing Manager, the Fellow is responsible for analyzing, describing, cataloging, and preparing archival and manuscript collections from all time periods and in all formats (including electronic records, web sites, and other born-digital content) for research use. These collections encompass University records, personal archives of faculty, staff, and other individuals associated with Harvard, records of organizations associated with Harvard, and published materials by and about the University, including web sites. The initial, principle focus for the Fellow will be to enhance access to collections of the Harvard University Archives documenting the history of the African, African-American, and Latin-American presence at Harvard as well as collections related to women.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Enhance discovery and access to Harvard University Archives' collections related to the African, African-American, and Latin-American presence at Harvard and collections related to women.
•     Survey collections already identified as in-scope, with goal of creating a guide to materials
•     Catalog and enhance collections lacking adequate descriptions in Harvard Library's public discovery systems with background research to provide historical context and targeted subject analysis
Survey and prepare preliminary inventories of new acquisitions.
•     Research and document history of the materials and their creators
•     Demarcate restricted materials as required
•     Ensure that documentation meets the needs of public services staff and is suitable for presentation to the immediate University community and those who donate materials to the Archives.
Process archival and manuscript materials, unpublished and published, in analog and electronic formats, in accordance with local guidelines and priorities and professional archival standards.
•     Prepare and describe archival and manuscript materials for research use
•     Create finding aids in electronic format using the Encoded Archival Description
•     Create MARC records in the Integrated Library System
•     Upgrade existing finding aids to meet current standards, including conversion from paper to electronic formats
As time permits, participate in instruction and outreach activities for students, faculty, and staff.
Contribute to the development of local standards, guidelines, and preferred practices for processing
•     Develop effective methodologies
•     Document local practices
•     Maintain currency with University, national and international standards and practices for the processing and intellectual control of archival materials

Basic Qualifications

•     MLS/MIS degree with concentration in archival studies or equivalent education or work experience required.
•     Two or more years of professional experience in an archives setting.
•     Requires working knowledge of library and archival cataloging systems including the ILS and ArchivesSpace, RDA and DACS descriptive standards, MARC and EAD encoding standards, and controlled vocabularies such as LCSH and AAT.

Additional Qualifications

•     Additional coursework or master's degree in history or American studies preferred.
•     Demonstrated attention to detail and excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) required.
•     Excellent organizational, analytical and communication (both orally and written) required.
•     Ability to read difficult handwriting styles.
