Position Available: The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a 100% twelve-month, Library tenure-system appointment.

Position Description: The University of Illinois seeks a dynamic faculty member to lead efforts that document the University’s world-class programs and initiatives related to the natural and applied sciences. Duties and Responsibilities:

This full-time tenure system faculty member (assistant, associate, or full level, depending on qualifications) will coordinate appraisal, processing, digitization, preservation, research access, and outreach functions for records and personal archives relating broadly to the fields of natural and applied sciences. The archivist will assume a leading role in providing instructional, reference, and public services for these materials. The archivist will use disciplinary knowledge and knowledge of archival standards and techniques to educate, engage, and assist all members of the University community as well as the public in research use of natural and applied sciences archives materials. The archivist will develop and implement plans to accession, arrange, describe, and provide access to the materials in all formats gathered from the administrative records and personal archives of relevant academic staff. They will also develop and administer a robust outreach program via websites, exhibits, and other ways that connect the archives materials with users.

This archivist will work with natural and applied sciences disciplines across the University including but not limited to engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, and medicine. As appropriate, the archivist will collaborate and develop relationships with faculty and administrators to support the work of the University Archives and Library. The archivist will also seek institutional or external resources through various means including writing and developing grant applications in support of programs and projects that ensure the long-term development of natural and applied sciences archives programs for the University. As appropriate the archivist will develop relationships with faculty and administrators to develop and implement archives programs, policies and procedures.
Responsibilities primarily, though not exclusively, related to natural and applied sciences archives materials include:
appraising and collecting records, personal papers, and oral histories in collaboration and consultation with appropriate experts in the University Archives and Library, including subject and functional specialists;
developing and cultivating relationships with creators of materials and determining the disposition of records in collaboration and consultation with Records and Information Management Services and the Faculty Papers Archivist:
planning, conducting, and supervising the work needed to survey, appraise, accession, arrange, and describe archives materials;
engaging in outreach and developing instructional programming for undergraduate and graduate students;
providing research services, instruction sessions, and remote reference services.
The University of Illinois Archives provides services to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, the public, and visiting scholars. Its holdings include official records of the University, personal and professional archives of prominent faculty and alumni, and associated manuscript collections including the Student Life and Culture Archives, and the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music. The Archives also holds records, papers, photographs, audiovisual materials, and related historical collections of affiliated associations such as the American Library Association and the Advertising Council. The Archives' permanent staff includes six archivists, four academic professionals, graduate assistants, and hourly student assistants.
Qualifications:

Required:
Masters in Library and Information Science with a specialization in archives; or Masters in History with a specialization in archives;
prior professional or pre-professional experience with archival techniques and practices;
demonstrated knowledge of standards for archives appraisal, arrangement, and description;
written evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and work to meet the requirements for promotion and tenure;
demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing;
demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and participate in group/team endeavors;
ability to move, rearrange, and otherwise handle records and archives materials.
Preferred:
demonstrated experience providing reference services for archival materials;
five years prior work in an academic archives, manuscripts repository, or research institution;
demonstrated knowledge of the history of the natural or applied sciences, such as that gained through work experience or graduate coursework in a natural or applied sciences discipline or advanced undergraduate or graduate work in the history of science and technology;
records management training or experience;
demonstrated experience with digitization and/or metadata creation;
demonstrated supervisory experience.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion. Library faculty have an obligation to remain professionally informed, to pursue the discovery of new knowledge related to their field of expertise, to disseminate the results of their scholarly work, and to seek opportunities for service to the Library, campus, state, nation and profession. Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
