ROLE of the POSITION

Reporting to the Head, Special Collections and Archives Technical Services, the Special Collections and Archives Technical Services Librarian is dedicated to improving access to and discovery of materials in Special Collections and Archives. This position will join a department responsible for accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing access to special collections materials in all formats, including personal papers, organizational archives, institutional records, maps, oral histories, photographs, serials, and monographs. This department works closely with the Libraries' Digital Collections Department and Discovery Services Department to provide timely and efficient access to Special Collections and Archives' monographs, serials, and archival materials.

The Special Collections and Archives Technical Services Librarian will perform arrangement, description, and preservation of archival materials in all formats (print and born-digital). With a commitment to employing efficient archival processing methods, this librarian will assess collections' processing needs and their evidential, informational, and research values to make processing recommendations, develop processing plans, and make appraisal recommendations. The librarian will employ nationally recognized principles, standards, and best practices to assess, plan, and propose a variety of actions to ensure the long-term accessibility and usability of the collections. The librarian will create collection descriptions using appropriate name and subject authorities and do research to recommend new name or subject establishment when needed. The librarian will perform quality assurance of finding aids prior to their publication online. This position will supervise student employees and interns who assist with stacks maintenance and the processing of Special Collections and Archives' archival materials, monographs, and serials. The position may also supervise temporary archival processing staff as funding permits.

The position will assist with all aspects of collection management, including stacks maintenance and overseeing the check-in of Special Collections and Archives' gift serials. The position will ensure timely and accurate shelving or storage of Special Collections and Archives' materials in all formats.

The Special Collections and Archives Technical Services Librarian will also serve on Special Collections and Archives' Reference Desk and assist in the department's outreach activities. The librarian will interview patrons to assess the type and extent of information required; explain and demonstrate the use of finding aids; research holdings in order to respond to in-person and remote inquiries; assist patrons in conducting research in all types of materials in Special Collections and Archives; assist in paging activities; and work shifts on holidays and evenings as necessary.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the Special Collections and Archives Technical Services Librarian will be expected to work collaboratively with others; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure. The person in this position will have demonstrated ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and he/she will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as with faculty and students.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Master's Degree in library or information science with a focus on archives from an American Library Association accredited program to be awarded no later than June 30, 2019.

Required

Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are highly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
At least one year of full-time (or equivalent hours) experience arranging and describing archival materials;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Demonstrated knowledge of standards and controlled vocabularies used in libraries and archives;
Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on professional principles, standards, and best practices;
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new concepts and technologies;
Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently or as part of team;
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse colleagues; and
Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative, and commitment to professional growth.
Preferred

Supervisory or leadership experience;
Undergraduate or graduate specialization in history;
Experience creating metadata (EAD, MARC, DC) using library and archival descriptive standards (RDA, DACS) and controlled vocabularies (LCSH, LCNAF, AAT);
Familiarity with archival collections management systems (such as Archives Space);
Familiarity with Library Services Platforms (such as Alma);
Demonstrated interest in, or familiarity with, trends in the stewardship of born-digital materials; and
Experience in customer service, particularly reference services.
SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II (equivalent to Assistant Professor). Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $65,000.
