ACADEMIC POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Cornell University Library - Apply by 6/18/2019

The Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections in the Cornell University Library seeks an archivist to process the personal papers of Dr. Joyce Brothers. Dr. Joyce Brothers (1927-2013) was an American psychologist, columnist, and television personality, whose career spanned decades.

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Technical Services, the Project Archivist will be responsible for the arrangement and description of approximately 230 cubic feet of records, identification and referral of items for conservation treatment as necessary, and the preparation of an EAD-encoded finding aid and other descriptive access tools. The Project Archivist will work closely with colleagues in the Library’s audiovisual digitization and preservation services units to coordinate the digitization and preservation of the collection’s significant media components on a variety of formats. The Project Archivist will submit regular progress reports on processing statistics.

The Project Archivist will participate on library-wide committees and will be expected to participate in professional activities related to archives, including reporting on the Dr. Joyce Brothers Papers processing and preservation activities.

Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program with a concentration in archives management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of archives and records management theory and practice, including experience processing archival records or personal papers.
• Knowledge of relevant standards for archival description, including DACS and EAD, and familiarity with other related metadata standards.
• Knowledge of basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections.
• Knowledge of audio and moving image media formats.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan, coordinate, and implement complex projects.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a production-oriented, team environment.
• Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and meet project goals and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of and strong interest in 20th century American cultural history.
• Experience arranging large, complex collections.
• Basic understanding of copyright and intellectual property issues.
• Two to three years of relevant professional experience, preferably in academic archives.
• Supervisory experience.

This is an 18-months benefits-eligible term appointment, with a possibility of extension.

Professional travel funding is available to support research. The anticipated academic rank for this position is Assistant Librarian, with a salary range of $52,500-$55,000.
