Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement

NYU’s Division of Libraries seeks a creative, strategic, and thoughtful Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement to lead a range of forward-looking, user-focused services in support of NYU Division of Libraries’ instruction and outreach activities. This is a newly-configured position focused on enhancing the Libraries’ engagement with NYU’s faculty, students, staff, and larger global community by providing effective, responsive services to meet evolving user information, teaching, and learning needs. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Division of Libraries and serving as a member of the Library’s Senior Leadership Team, the Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement will work across the organization to establish strategic priorities, allocate resources, make personnel decisions, set policies, and make strategic and operational decisions.

The Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement will provide visionary leadership for advancing the instructional and outreach priorities of the Division of Libraries. The incumbent will lead a new unit that brings together undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, online instruction, instructional design, reference services, and programming and outreach. The Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement will form partnerships within and beyond the NYU community in order to create an expansive service strategy for the Division of Libraries as a vital collaborator in NYU’s institutional mission of producing and sharing research, teaching, and creative expression with a global impact.

Responsibilities:

• Establishing collaborative strategies to create a robust, responsive, and coherent Division of Libraries outreach portfolio that supports teaching and learning in NYU’s academic departments, centers, institutes, interdisciplinary programs, and its community partners.
• Cultivating Division of Libraries partnerships with teaching, learning, and outreach offices across NYU, including NYU’s global sites and our NYU libraries in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai.
• Developing the Division of Libraries as a hub of forward-looking, critical learner-centered pedagogy and a convener of communities of practice around teaching and learning across the university.
• Creating new user-centered programs to enhance student success and assessing their effectiveness.
• Highlighting the Division of Libraries collections, services, and expertise in order to engage with audiences with a diversity of interests.
• Providing strategic leadership and vision for teams of instructional, reference, and outreach experts and librarians consisting of 20+ FTE.
• Representing the Division of Libraries on NYU-wide committees and task forces focused on teaching, learning, student success, outreach, and engagement.
• Advocating for and cultivating an environment of diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity.
• Fostering the professional growth of Division of Libraries’ faculty and staff.
• Creating a culture that encourages and rewards creative-thinking and inclusivE collaboration.
• Participating as a member of the Division of Libraries’ Senior Leadership Team in shared decision-making around personnel actions, resource management, and development of policies for all Division operations and services.
• Representing the Division of Libraries locally, nationally, and internationally on matters related to teaching, learning, and engagement.
• Collaborating with other Division of Libraries’ Senior Leadership Team members to pursue external funding for the Division of Libraries.

Qualifications:

Minimum:
•     Knowledge of the evolving educational and engagement landscapes in higher education with an understanding of the research library’s role in that environment.
•     Understanding of and interest in educational technology and its applications in a research library.
•     Demonstrated ability to articulate vision, set directions, and accomplish initiatives in rapidly changing environments.
•     Proven leadership, management, and interpersonal skills which encourage teamwork, collaboration, and relationship building.
•     Demonstrated commitment to the creation of diverse, inclusive cultures of equity and belonging.
•     Strong commitment to staff engagement and development.
•     Superior written and oral communication skills.
•     Minimum seven years of relevant professional experience creating educational and outreach programs in collaboration with diverse stakeholders in academic libraries or related institutions, with increasing administrative responsibility.
•     Minimum of five years’ experience supervising and mentoring staff.
•     A Master’s degree in a relevant subject area, e.g., an ALA-accredited MLS in library or information science. Note: To be considered for tenure, the successful candidate must have completed two advanced degrees, one of which must be an ALA-accredited MLS.
Preferred:
•     Second graduate degree.
•     Experience in evaluating and assessing services.
•     Experience with initiating grant opportunities and/or working on grant-funded projects.
