The Alameda County Library provides library services from ten libraries in the cities of Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, and Union City and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. The Alameda County Library also provides additional services through Mobile and Outreach Services, Education and Literacy Services, and Social Justice Services.

The County Library was established in 1910 and is governed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. The Alameda County Library Advisory Commission advises County Librarian, Cynthia Chadwick, and the Board of Supervisors on library services.

The County Library is funded primarily by local property taxes, with additional revenue from State grants and contracts with cities for additional open hours and services.

The Board of Supervisors allocates a portion of utility users and business license tax which is collected only in the unincorporated areas of the County to the Library for service to the unincorporated areas. The Alameda County Library Foundation and active Friends of the Library or Library League groups in each community support library programs and services. Under general supervision, Librarian I’s provide professional services for library members or assist in the operation of a library; may be assigned to general reference, children’s services, young adult services or technical services; and do related work as required.

The ideal candidate is willing to work at any location throughout the Alameda County Library. This includes, but is not limited to the Albany, Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Fremont Neighborhood, Newark, San Lorenzo, and Union City locations. Mobile and Outreach Services, Technical Services and Social Justice Services are headquartered in the Library Administration building in Fremont.

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed below, the ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:

•Understands social media and new technology suitable for a Library environment to maximize organizational and individual impact.
•Possesses an excellent command of oral and written communication.
•Driven to explore and develop evidence-based best practices.
•Familiar with the fundamentals of planning, presenting, and evaluating library programs.
•Engages with all levels of library employees and celebrates the diversity of library patrons of all backgrounds.
•Works as a member of a team or committee to accomplish stated goals and deliver effective results.
•Adapts quickly and easily when experiencing changes in work responsibilities, work environment, processes, or cultures.
•Assists in the setting and implementing unit/branch goals, objectives, services, and procedures.
•Establishes and maintains credibility with the public, partners, customers, and co-workers.
•Exercises excellent judgment and composure in explaining policy and procedures.
•Makes the best use of time and resources when working independently.


The Alameda County Library has full-time and part-time vacancies currently available throughout the organization.

Community Libraries

Librarians assigned to a Community Library provide direct service within the diverse communities of Alameda County to support the Library’s mission. Librarians in a Community Library work with members of all ages and backgrounds and are generally assigned to focus on a specific population. Librarians work collaboratively with internal and external partners and perform professional work in outreach, program development, reference and readers advisory, and other duties as assigned.

Social Justice Services

Social Justice Services provides library programs, services, and materials to marginalized populations with reduced access to traditional libraries. We currently offer services across Alameda County. Social Justice Services also coordinates the Library’s Summer Lunch @ the Library Program and is continuing to seek out new opportunities to serve these communities. The Library is currently seeking one librarian with a passion for working with underserved and marginalized populations, who has strong readers advisory skills, and excels in planning library programs. Librarians serving in Social Justice Services will need to be able to follow policies and procedures in secure environments, demonstrate an ability to remain calm and clear-headed in intense environments, and work in partnership with sworn and non-sworn staff across all departments served.

Mobile and Outreach Services

Mobile and Outreach Services delivers library services directly to high need communities across Alameda County. The Library is currently seeking one librarian whose role involves outreach, building community partnerships, reference, and reader's advisory. We are looking for a creative and energetic team player that wants to spread the word about the amazing resources the library has to offer and is comfortable working onboard a mobile library.
