Position Available: This position is available as soon as possible. This is a 100% time, permanent, twelve-month appointment Academic Professional position in the University Library.

Duties and Responsibilities: Develops an innovative and responsive instructional program supporting all aspects of the media production lifecycle. Through collaboration with team members and Library and campus partners, the successful candidate will design and teach workshops and course-integrated instruction sessions focused on creating multimedia projects for classroom assignments and student portfolios. As part of the University Library’s Media Commons [https://www.library.illinois.edu/mc/], the Specialist will develop a robust program that educates students about media production standards and workflows from storyboarding and pre-production planning, through selecting and utilizing cameras, through editing and producing high quality final projects.



Position Description: Reporting to the Media Commons Coordinator, the Media Instructional Specialist, will provide unique and original service to further the Library’s strategic goal of developing collaboration spaces and incubator environments to foster research and learning, part of the Library’s Framework for Strategic Action < http://go.illinois.edu/framework>.



The successful candidate will:

Teaching and Instruction

Provide leadership for the integration of media and digital literacy into courses taught through the Media Commons. Work with the Media Commons staff to develop and teach relevant course-integrated instruction sessions to support student learning;
Develop and teach workshops on processes and workflows for integrating multimedia resources into student and research projects;
Coordinate the design of an online learning toolkit in support of technology instruction, self-paced learning, and course integration of Media Commons resources;
Conduct training and provide documentation for technologies and services developed in the Media Commons;


Other Major Duties

Play an active role in building relationships between Media Commons services and facilities and teaching and research needs of campus units;
Investigate, develop, and support facilities and technologies related to Media Commons services;
Supervise hourly employees, graduate assistants, and student assistants in the provision of Media Commons services Contribute to promotion and marketing of Media Commons services and collections;
Foster a positive and collaborative work culture;
Pursue professional development to keep current on trends and developments in media and technology, and in delivery of technology integration in the curriculum.

Some investigations originating in this manner may evolve into regular work assignments or production activities.



Qualifications Required:

Master’s degree in Educational Technology, digital media, computer graphics, technology or computer science, or related field;
Minimum of two years technical experience using multimedia software and hardware in the media production lifecycle;
Experience providing classroom instruction in an educational setting and/or experience providing technology demonstrations or presentations;
Demonstrated leadership, communication, public speaking, and team-building skills;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse community;
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and busy environment;
Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to collaborative projects within and outside the organization.


Qualifications Preferred:

Minimum of two years of professional experience in an academic environment or research library environment;
Experience communicating technology use and best practices with a non-technical audience;
Experience developing training documentation;
Prior teaching experience utilizing multimedia authoring software, such as the Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, etc.;
Demonstrated knowledge of trends in instructional planning, classroom management, and student learning;

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience.



Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 work days' vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
