University of Iowa Libraries, Special Collections Department
Community & Student Life Archivist
Residency Librarian Program

Program Description:
The Residency Librarian Program at the University of Iowa Libraries offers early-career librarians the opportunity for their first professional-level experience in academic librarianship. As a founding member of the ACRL Diversity Alliance, the University of Iowa is committed to increasing the hiring pipeline of qualified and talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged groups. The goals of the Residency Librarian Program align with the Libraries’ and University’s strategic goal of excellence through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The three-year specified term appointment is designed to provide an immersion into academic librarianship, an opportunity to focus on areas of interest and funding to support professional engagement at the national level. By participating in the Residency Librarian program, individuals will demonstrate skills at a professional level, develop a professional network, and be prepared for their next career opportunity. Resident librarians are not eligible for promotion but are full-time and have access to benefits, paid leave, etc. They may apply for permanent positions for which they feel qualified but are not guaranteed continued employment following the residency.
