The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries, an archive, and two mobile units in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. MCFL’s mission is to provide welcoming, equitable and inclusive opportunities for all to connect, learn and explore. It delivers public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato.

The Librarian I is responsible for a variety of technical and public service assignments requiring the application of library science principles and practices with a minimum of instruction and guidance. This position is the entry level position in the Librarian Series. As a part of this recruitment, the Librarian I could focus on teen and adult services, children’s services, or a collection development/selector role in technical services. Duties include:

·        Conducting general and extensive reference searches and reader's advisory services
·        Assisting and advising patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment, including automated catalogs and Internet software
·        Explaining library policies and procedures to patrons of all ages
·        Developing and conducting outreach or on-site programs in local organizations including schools that support educational equity
·        Preparing displays and exhibits related to community needs
·        Explaining library policies and procedures to patrons and staff
·        Selecting materials to help build and balance the MCFL Collection
·        Assisting and advising patrons about the use of library materials and equipment
·        Planning and conducting programs for teens and adults or children and their families

There are currently (3) full-time vacancies available at the Marin County Free Library:
·        A teen and adult services focused position at the Novato Branch
·        A children’s and educational equity focused position at the South Novato Branch

·        A digital and physical materials selection focused position in our Technical Services Unit located in San Rafael.


Our Highly Qualified Candidate: is passionate about providing excellent library services to community members and patrons. This candidate must be able to communicate effectively and to collaborate with colleagues and community partners. The highly qualified Librarian I candidate is an enthusiastic, customer-service oriented person who can assist people from a cross-section of backgrounds with their information needs. Equity and inclusion are at the forefront of Marin County Free Library’s customer service model, so we are seeking someone who will be a champion for these efforts. They will possess public library experience, will be comfortable working with new and evolving forms of technology, and can deliver library services that are patron-centered while adjusting their personal communication style and content as appropriate to produce useful results. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the library and will thrive in a team-oriented environment. A track record of success and firm commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in service delivery, materials selection, program outcomes; and, workplace relationships are also highly desirable. Course work in the area of service specialization is desirable.
