Academic Professional Position
University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign


Position Available: As soon as possible after closing date. This is a full-time, Academic Professional position in the University Library.

Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Director of DEIA is responsible for providing leadership and advocacy within the Library to promote a workplace culture that supports all aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This position seeks to help all people feel welcome and valued, and to ensure that employees of all backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities are able to come together for the common purpose of advancing the mission of the Library.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Develops, assesses, implements, and drives strategies that support sustained progress towards the DEIA vision; establishes methods to assess and track progress, including training programs and communication efforts about diversity and inclusion initiatives, events, and progress
In collaboration with the Dean, AULs, and leadership groups in the Library (including the Executive Committee, Administrative Council, and others), this position shares in Library-wide planning, policy development, resource allocation, and personnel management; contributes to the development of strategic initiatives; employs evidence-based decision making; and plays a key role in developing a shared vision for the Library’s future
Builds relationships and actively engages with campus entities and with peer institutions to support knowledge sharing and partnership around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts
Serves as an expert liaison for matters related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility including policy development and implementation; interpretation of University policies, processes, and procedures; and personnel-related situations
Develops and implements measurable goals and metrics, and uses data, research, and evidence-based practice to identify and change systems, structures, policies, practices and individual behaviors that perpetuate systemic barriers to equity, access, and inclusion
Serves in Library Administration and works closely with the Business and Human Resources Service Center and units in the Library to ensure employee-related processes, such as recruiting, hiring, employment discrimination, management, professional development, and related efforts and programming are fair, inclusive, and accessible
Partners with Library Administration, the Business and Human Resources Service Center, departmental libraries, committees, and subject matter experts to identify priorities and establish a collective vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility across the Library
Identifies strategies and leads efforts for fostering public engagement to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
Coordinates with campus stakeholders and units on responses to emerging local, national, or global events that affect the experience of students, faculty and/or staff from historically marginalized groups and populations, and steward relationships with communities and organizations on which the library depends


Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in a visible leadership role in a professional setting
Demonstrated awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility best practices
Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of difference, privilege, and power, and ability to foster constructive dialogue with different groups across campus, establish ongoing communication structures, and work in collaboration with others to ensure an inclusive environment
Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with experience in facilitation and presenting to groups
Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and conduct effective training
Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, manage, and complete projects

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Diversity and Equity, Human Resources Development, Labor and Employment Relations, or a related field
SHRM Certified Diversity Professional (CDP); Certified Diversity Executive (CDE); Cornell Certified Diversity Professional (CCDP); or other related diversity certification
Strong coaching skills
Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate metrics, research or trends into strategies
Familiarity with higher education environment
Familiarity with academic and research libraries

Some investigations originating in this manner may evolve into regular work assignments or production activities.

Salary Range of $70,000 - $100,000. Open to a wide range of individuals who meet the minimum requirements, and thus the salary is commensurate with skills, education and experience. This position is eligible for the Library’s Academic Professional Promotion Program. Terms of Appointment: Permanent, twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance is available to employees (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
