TITLE: Business Research and Instruction Librarian
LOCATION:   Foster Business Library

THE LIBRARIES:

Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment. The Libraries was commended in the University's 2003 accreditation review for its rich collection, well-qualified staff, and "exceptional service to students, staff development, and a commitment to planning and assessment of service."

THE FOSTER BUSINESS LIBRARY:

Recently renovated, the Foster Business Library provides users with a beautiful facility, a wide range of electronic resources, wireless connectivity and power at all seats, comfortable group and individual seating, and a forward-looking and service-oriented staff. The new physical connection with the Foster School of Business classroom buildings offers opportunities for new ways to engage the business school community. THE POSITION

The University of Washington Libraries seeks a service-oriented, innovative, and collaborative Business Research and Instruction Librarian.

Under the general direction of the Head, Foster Business Library, the Business Research and Instruction Librarian provides in-depth as well as general business reference and consultation services to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The Business Research and Instruction Librarian provides collaborative leadership in the development, delivery, and assessment of instructional services for business students and serves as library liaison to assigned departments and programs. This position also is responsible for collection development in assigned areas and supervision of the Business Library’s Graduate Student Reference Specialist. Other responsibilities include the development of online business research guides and maintenance of portions of the business library web page. This position serves as Foster Library liaison to UW Libraries Information Technology Services department and installs and maintains specific business databases on Foster Library computers.



SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

·        Provides business reference and research consultation services in person and remotely, using a broad range of digital and print resources. Helps support in-depth business research endeavors.



·        Provides collaborative leadership in the development and assessment of an effective and engaging Foster Business Library instructional program.



·        Works with other business librarians to deliver instructional and outreach services.



·        Participates in Libraries-wide chat and email reference services.



·        Develops user-oriented online research guides and other discovery tools for the broad area of business study and shares responsibility for maintaining Foster Business Library web pages.



·        Serves as liaison and maintains strong relationships with assigned academic departments and programs.



·        Serves as selector for assigned subject areas.



·        Serves as Foster Library liaison to UW Libraries Information Technology Services department. Installs and maintains Bloomberg and Datastream on public and staff computers.



·        Hires, supervises, and trains Foster Business Library Graduate Student Reference Specialist.



·        Contributes to strategic direction and initiatives of Foster Business Library and University Libraries.



·        Participates in Libraries committees and meetings.



·        Works evenings and weekends as needed.



·        Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.





QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

·        Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.



·        Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.



·        One year of library experience providing reference and instructional services, or some combination of equivalent relevant experience.



·        Knowledge of business or business-related information resources, both online and print.



·        Experience or training in library user education and instructional technology. Understanding of key issues and trends in the design and delivery of library instruction in support of the academic mission of the university.



·        Knowledge of collection development practices and issues, especially in a business or business-related area.



·        Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies to meet changing user needs. Proficiency with application software, including Excel, WORD, and database management systems.



·        Excellent written and oral communication skills.



·        Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and work both independently and collaboratively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.



Preferred:

·        Degree or academic background in business or business-related area.



·        Experience providing business reference services in an academic or special library.



·        Experience in collection development, especially in a business or business-related area.



·        Demonstrated ability and experience with business or economic numeric data resources.



·        Experience assisting users with large data sets.



·        Experience supervising or leading co-workers.





SALARY:        $42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background. This is a full-time position.

BENEFITS:     Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
