Job Description Summary


Under the general supervision of the University Librarian, this tenure-track faculty librarian will work in a collaborative environment to actively engage with target Spanish-speaking student populations, along with the general student population and faculty to understand and effectively respond to their information and research needs, working with the other reference and instruction librarians to foster and encourage a culture of learning and use of library resources, collections, and research services. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong service orientation coupled with an enthusiasm for well thought out creative approaches to teaching that will promote increased information literacy among students, supporting the mission of the library and the university. There is also a strong need for this position to speak, read, and write Spanish fluently.

This tenure-track faculty position is expected to work collaboratively with teaching faculty to develop subject-specific information literacy instruction using the ACRL Frames, create LibGuides to support instruction and curriculum, provide assistance with collection development, and conduct general outreach to students and faculty. The Reference and Instruction Librarian will also provide outstanding reference/research service; and be able to assist students with writing support from start to finish as needed, using common citation styles such as APA and MLA. The Reference and Instruction Librarian contributes their individual skills and experience as needed in order to support the library’s mission, values, and objectives, relying on teamwork and judgment in establishing priorities among changing and competing demands, while also focusing on special initiative and projects, such as AVENU.

Tenure track faculty librarians are expected to support the mission of the university through their work in the library; they are also expected to publish and present at conferences; and, give of their time and talent through service to the university, the larger community, and the profession.

 

Job Description

 

Duties and Tasks:

  • Working with other faculty librarians and teaching faculty to provide outstanding library and writing instruction and information literacy in a manner that supports accreditation standards in person and via the Internet or other technologies, including Zoom, Collaborate, and VTT, averaging 40 per year.
  • Providing general reference/research and writing support an average of 15-18 hours per week, helping patrons with their informational and research needs at the reference desk, during individual appointments, and online, including LibChat.
  • Collecting, sharing, and maintaining documentation and statistical information on their instruction.
  • Working collaboratively with the other librarians to create and share teaching materials such as online tutorials, web pages, handouts, and online research guides.
  • Assisting with library outreach programs to better engage faculty members in the use and application of information resources and services.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with students and faculty that respond to trends in teaching and learning.
  • Contributing information via blogs, social media, website, twitter, etc. to promote awareness of library services, resources and tools.
  • Participating in department, library, and university planning as needed.
  • Supporting collection development.
  • Accepting and implementing other duties as assigned.

     

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge:

  • Master's Degree from an American Library Association accredited program in Library and Information Studies, and some teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Understanding of reference, research, and writing services in an academic or research library environment.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in research and instructional services, IL instruction using traditional and non-traditional teaching techniques
  • Knowledge or current trends in writing support as part of the research and writing continuum in an academic library

 

Skills:

  • Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish to support native Spanish language students.
  • Effective and engaging instruction and presentation skills.
  • Effective one-on-one research and writing support skills to reduce library anxiety and writing anxiety.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer applications skills related to libraries, including Zotero, Mendelay, Qualtrics, Socrative, Zoom, library databases, and other research tools
  • Computer application skills using Microsoft Office, LibAnswers, and other library-related software

     

Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, collaboration, and cooperation are essential. Must be service-oriented, energetic, collegial, and self-motivated
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects independently while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexibly, creatively, and collaboratively with others in a changing, lean, and fast-paced environment with a diverse population. Proactive and interested in outreach efforts for information literacy and integrating IL into the curriculum.

 

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • A second graduate degree in composition, rhetoric, STEM, or Business is strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to present and publish also not required but strongly desired.
