Position Description:

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative librarian to serve as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Liaison and Innovation Librarian for the Library’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Division (PSED) libraries. The PSED libraries -- the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, the Chemistry Library, and the Mathematics Library -- provide services to a variety of units on the Illinois campus, including the College of Engineering; the School of Chemical Sciences; the Departments of Physics, Astronomy, Geology, and Mathematics; the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine; and a number of world-renowned research institutes.

Working closely with other PSED librarians, the successful candidate will develop general and specific liaison programs and services that support all aspects of the research lifecycle, and will help coordinate the PSED’s innovation and entrepreneurial services, including research impact analyses and assessments, data visualization, custom database production, and discovery and usability research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, the Liaison and Innovation Librarian contributes to a variety of public service programs. Specific duties will include (but are not limited to):

·        Serve as liaison to designated departments within the UIUC College of Engineering
·        Assist in developing overarching liaison programs and services that increase the Library’s role in supporting end-to-end knowledge creation and the research lifecycle
·        Participate in reference services and other public service focused activities
·        Collaborate with other PSED librarians on research data management services, scholarly communication support activities, and research productivity tools
·        With other PSED librarians and the Grainger Engineering Library IDEA Lab (https://www.library.illinois.edu/enx/idealab/) coordinator, assist in developing services utilizing the IDEA Lab and other innovation spaces within PSED libraries
·        Participate in PSED libraries instructional and information literacy programs
·        Participate in and contribute to University Library engagement and communication efforts.
·        Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national and international colleagues and organizations.

Qualifications:

Required:
·        Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent
·        At least one-year of experience working in an academic or special library environment OR a degree in an engineering or physical science subject area
·        Knowledge of new and emerging information technologies and approaches that enhance public-facing library services and innovation
·        Demonstrated ability to work collegially with others in a team environment
·        Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all elements of an academically and culturally diverse community
·        Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
·        Preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a tenure-track faculty appointment and indications of ability to meet the promotion and tenure requirements of the University

Preferred:
·        Experience in developing innovative library services
·        Experience liaising with academic science or engineering departments
·        Experience with entrepreneurship in a library context
·        Experience using visualization or virtual reality environments in a library context
·        Demonstrated Web or library application software development skills
·        Experience in a science or engineering library
·        Experience providing public services in a library context
·        Experience performing user research in a library context
·        Knowledge of data management principles and practices
·        Knowledge of instructional tools development
·        Degree or coursework in an engineering or physical sciences discipline

Environment:
The PSED is currently home (division-wide) to 7 librarians (including this position), 13 staff, and 4.25 FTE graduate assistants from the School of Information Sciences. Served by the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center and the other PSED Libraries, the University of Illinois College of Engineering is home to more than 9,000 undergraduates, 3,400 graduates and 430 faculty involved in more than 2,000 research projects with $239 million in research expenditures for FY 2017. The University ranked 7th among U.S. universities (and top in the Big Ten) in number of undergraduate and graduate alumni hired in 2016 by the 25 largest Silicon Valley employers. Salary and Rank: Salary and rank commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
