Essential Functions (Job Duties)
The Wayne State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Vera P. Shiffman Medical Library. A critical resource for the largest medical school in the country, the Shiffman Medical Library supports the research, education, public health and health information needs of the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, including landmark medical achievements such as the world's first successful open-heart surgery and the discovery of AZT for the treatment of AIDS and COVID-19 research. As a national leader in health equity and disparities research, the Wayne State University School of Medicine attracts top-tier students and has a proud history of alumni who break barriers--beginning with Joseph Ferguson who was the first African American in Michigan to obtain a medical degree in 1869.

As part of a leadership team dedicated to providing inclusive and accessible services and resources, the Director will craft and execute a vision to continue to strengthen the Library's value in this changing age of information management. S/he will harness the strengths of a highly talented staff through effective management, empowerment, inspiration, and leading by example. The Director will maximize resources provided for staffing, collections, services and special projects through sound judgement and strong financial acumen. Externally, the Director will be highly collaborative, complementing and broadening the work of the Wayne State University Libraries, across campus and within the greater University community, through building strong and productive partnerships.

The successful candidate will be a strong, resourceful leader with a vision of how the Shiffman Medical Library can continue to meet the evolving needs of its constituents and add value to the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and other responsibilities will include:

Ensure library services and resources support the educational, research, health care needs of the campus community;

Provide professional expertise, administrative leadership, and overall direction for the Library including strategic, financial and space planning;

Actively collaborates with campus and community stakeholders to identify opportunities, programs, and resources to maintain state-of-the-art services and identifies innovative technologies and solutions to address changing information needs;

Provides primary administrative leadership for all operational areas of the Library including allocation of financial resources and personnel;

Provides direct supervision to academic staff Represents the Library locally, regionally, and nationally. 
 

Qualifications
Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association;

Significant experience in a medical or other health sciences library, including fiscal and personnel management responsibilities;

Proven ability to lead a team of professionals, promote team growth and foster development of team members;

Successful planning, implementing and evaluating of library services and programs;

Demonstrated ability to obtain grant funding and raise funds;

Proven ability to lead and implement strategic initiatives;

Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Demonstrated capacity to work collegially and effectively with diverse groups of administrative leaders, faculty and professional staff of academic and healthcare institutions;

The experience and disposition to work in the public sector and a unionized environment;

Demonstrated ability to foster local and regional collaborations and participate in national programs. 
 

Preferred Qualifications
Additional graduate degree in an area related to medicine, pharmacy, or other health sciences.

Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).
