As the Head, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for Engagement and Outreach, you will provide leadership for instruction, consultation, outreach, and engagement activities supporting STEM librarianship across Penn State. This 12-month tenure-track position reporting to the Associate Dean. You will contribute to a highly collaborative organization by leading and coordinating innovative and user-centered services for student and faculty in STEM.

Duties and Responsibilities
As the Head, STEM for Engagement and Outreach you will provide innovative leadership and management for a team of 19 faculty and staff, with direct supervision of faculty librarians, in the areas of agriculture, earth and mineral sciences, engineering, life sciences, and physical and mathematical sciences distributed among four physical locations at University Park, and oversee the design, implementation, assessment and management of policies and workflows for departmental activities. You will play a key role in guiding and evolving the University Libraries’ embedded librarian program, which supports deep integration of University Libraries resources and areas of expertise into University curricula and research. You will provide leadership with STEM liaisons on all Penn State campuses (24) for library strategic initiatives and will collaborate closely with Library Learning Services, Research Informatics & Publishing, Acquisitions Service, and other Libraries colleagues on all of these initiatives.

The Head, STEM for Engagement and Outreach will play a lead role in establishing a cohesive strategy for partnering and coordinating with academic schools, colleges, and institutes across the University, and continuing collaborations with the Harrell Health Sciences Library at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. As the Head, Stem for Engagement and Outreach, you will develop relationships and seek opportunities for collaboration with University communities involved in transdisciplinary areas of research and learning, such as Invent Penn State’s entrepreneurial community and the Penn State Student Engagement Network’s community of student empowerment.

The Head of STEM for Engagement and Outreach will be a leader who fosters collaboration and advocates for open access, ethical use of information, awareness of social responsibility and historical institutional biases. You will advocate for the department to the University Libraries administration and serve on the Dean’s Library Council. You will stay current on developing technologies, standards, and best practices; and represent the Libraries at the local, national, and international level.

Qualifications
Required
Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant subject area combined with appropriate experience in a research library setting; Demonstrated leadership experience in a library setting; Demonstrated understanding of the research process and data lifecycle in STEM; Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to plan, coordinate, and implement effective projects; Strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation and teamwork skills; Ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure.

Desired
Experience supervising library faculty or staff; Research and professional activity in STEM librarianship, instruction and/or outreach activities; An advanced degree or graduate level study in a science field; Experience providing instruction and reference consultations in conjunction with course-design to support learning objectives; Experience writing and managing grants.

Compensation and Benefits:
Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation, excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA retirement options, and educational privileges. In addition, faculty in the University Libraries are afforded funds for professional development travel annually.
