Full time: 37.5 hours
Schedule includes evening and Sunday hours.

NATURE OF WORK:
The Engagement Services team is looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated and creative individual who is eager to launch our planned library branch at the Robert Crown Center. This candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish, reflect the diversity of our community and be committed to exploring the frontiers of what equitable access to resources means to Evanston. Under the direction of the branch Supervising Librarian, this position will oversee programming and library service for youth both in the branch and in the community and will work with other staff to develop the juvenile and teen collections at the branch. This will require regular communication with individuals in the community and staff at a variety of Evanston institutions and organizations that serve children and teens including Recreation Department staff that share space in the Robert Crown Center in order to partner in planning and delivering services that meet the diverse expectations and needs of Evanston residents.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
Plans, presents, and evaluates innovative hands-on programming to a diverse population of youth, parents, caregivers and educators both by library staff and in partnership with individuals and organizations.. Programming can relate to or include cultural awareness, science, technology, engineering, the arts or math and other activities that will appeal to youth and teens. Provides tours and class visit programs of the facility in coordination with the Supervising Librarian.
Assists library users, primarily youth including teens, with the use of library materials, services, equipment and facilities, including help in accessing online resources and downloading library media.
Meets with Evanston individuals and organizations that serve children and teens to build sustainable partnerships and to determine needs and expectations. Plans school and community outreach/engagement for youth and teens in coordination with staff at the main branch.
Staffs public desks as needed.
Interviews patrons carefully to determine what information is required and provides clear, accurate and timely answers to all patron inquiries, using print and electronic resources both in the branch and beyond.
Updates website with event information and creates promotional materials for youth programs.
Maintains current knowledge of the Library’s juvenile, teen and adult collections and electronic resources, keeping abreast of industry trends and innovations. Reads, listens to, and views a wide variety of literature and media.
In coordination with the Acquisitions staff at the main library and the branch Supervising Librarian, selects materials for and maintains youth and teen collections.
Works with main library staff to develop and maintain recommended booklists and resource guides for youth and teens.
Serves as senior staff member in charge of the Branch in the Supervising Librarian’s absence.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
This position requires a Masters degree in Library and Information Science. At least two years of experience working with youth and teens. Collection development experience is a plus.
Spanish Language proficiency is required.
Considerable knowledge of youth and teen literature and authors, graphic novels, films, music, and games. Must be fluent with social media and personal technologies currently in use among youth.
Experience and interest in any of the following areas: storytime; music and video creation and editing, graphic design, computer animation, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related activities (robotics, computer programming 3-D printing etc.): public speaking and creative writing desired.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff in the Library, as well as outside organizations and individuals.
Ability to perform mathematical functions and logically define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and determine a course of action.
Ability to use math and to define problems, collect data, draw valid conclusions and plan reasonable actions based on these conclusions.
Ability to prioritize many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, newspapers, memos, letters, reports and legal documents.
Ability to prepare business letters, expositions, summaries, and reports, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, dictation, and style.

SPECIAL LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science required from a program accredited by the American Library Association.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:          
The ability to work in a primarily sedentary position, with the ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 20 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes.
There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.

SUPERVISION:
Under the direction of the Supervising Librarian, this individual has contact with other library agencies and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele request. The employee is responsible for identifying and prioritizing work tasks, and for utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability and performance in accordance with this classification standard.
