Amherst College invites applications for the position of audit archivist. The audit archivist is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-3. This is a three-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.

Reporting to the faculty director of the college's Center for Russian Culture (ACRC), the audit archivist will conduct a full inventory and appraisal survey of the center's collections. This inventory and survey will track the provenance and reconstruct the custodial history of the collections. Based on the survey results, the audit archivist will make recommendations for the prioritization of collections processing, identify collections of uncertain provenance, and identify preservation and copyright concerns.

Although the position reports to the director of the ACRC, the head of Frost Library's Archives and Special Collections at Amherst College and the library's college archivist will work with the audit archivist to ensure consistency of policies and procedures across the two units.

About the Center for Russian Culture

The Amherst Center for Russian Culture was founded in 1991 by Amherst College alumnus Thomas P. Whitney, class of 1937, a diplomat, journalist, translator, author, and collector of Russian manuscripts, rare books, journals, newspapers and art for more than thirty years. Since 1998, the center's reading room and art gallery has been located on the second floor of Webster Hall, adjacent to the Amherst College Russian department. The center also includes a storage facility, located in the basement of Webster Hall.

The centerpiece of the ACRC is Whitney's collection of material documenting Russian migr poetry. The collection has continued to grow in twentieth century Russian literature (especially poetry), history and culture. Recent acquisitions have focused most heavily on the "third and fourth waves" of Russian emigration beginning in 1970.

The archival collections held in the ACRC comprise roughly 400 linear feet of unpublished works, versions of published works, and correspondence between writers. The collections include material by notables such as Vasily Kandinsky, Boris Pilnyak, Ivan Bunin, Ilya Ehrenburg, Vladimir Nabokov, Aleksei Remizov, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Anna Akhmatova, Nikolai Gumilev, and Marina Tsvetaeva. The critic, poet, and thinker Zinaida Gippius is well-represented in the collection, as is the author Boris Pasternak.
