Joanna M. Arteaga La Spina - STATEMENT
California Region Chapter Representative

My journey with REFORMA and my local chapter, BPLG, started when I changed careers in my mid-30s and started working at San Mateo County Libraries as a Community Program Specialist. Latinx librarians mentored, guided, and introduced me to BPLG and REFORMA members at my first ALA conference in 2015. Active and non-active REFORMA members supported me as I gained more experience in the field of libraries, explored the possibility of getting my MLIS, applied for school and scholarships to cover graduate school, and applied for jobs. That mentorship was pivotal in continuing grad school and graduating, applying to the San Francisco Public Library, becoming a Librarian, and becoming a Branch Manager. The time with REFORMA members, past and present, made a difference for me and helped me stay focused and energized over the past ten years. I wish to become your Chapter Representative for the West Region to give back as I continue my journey in advocacy and access for the Spanish and Latinx communities.
