PART-TIME LIBRARIAN I/LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

The Mill Valley Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian who is passionate about public service, shows initiative, has a strong work ethic, and has an interest in programming to work the adult and/or children’s desk. This is a great opportunity to get experience in programming, reference work, and reader’s advisory. Part-time staff are encouraged to develop their own programs and initiatives and are given opportunities to attend training to advance their careers. You will work in a very fast-paced, collaborative environment.  

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS:

3 -12 hours per week depending on availability.

Salary: $20.56 - $37.54/hour depending on experience and education.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Staffing the Adult and/or Children’s Reference Desk is the primary responsibility of this position. A knowledge of literature or the desire to read widely is essential in making book recommendations and is an important part of the job. All staff are given the opportunity to develop and participate in programming and outreach. This position has a schedule that includes afternoons, nights and weekends. The Mill Valley Library is fast-paced and innovative. The person in this position needs to learn new skills quickly, adapt easily to change, be detail-oriented, and patron focused.?Most part-time staff are cross trained to work in other Departments as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Provide reference services including readers’ advisory.
• Help select books for personalized reading lists and book packs for children and teens (Children's Reference).
• Assist in planning and implementing programming and conducting outreach.
• Support the Library's initiatives that seek to increase diversity, equity and inclusiveness including work on diversifying the collection.
• Provide the best service possible to all patrons with consistency and in line with library policies.
