Metadata Librarian
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) University Libraries are seeking a collaborative, team-oriented individual to fill the role of Metadata Librarian, responsible for managing and overseeing digital collections and digital exhibits metadata projects, training, documentation, and workflows, and quality control. The Metadata Librarian leads in all metadata aspects for projects, repository configurations, and digital projects grants, providing input, training, documentation, and feedback.  

The Metadata Librarian works collaboratively with the Head of Digital Projects, as well as campus constituencies to develop strategic directions and assess service quality in these areas. This position is a 12-month non-tenure track, ranked benefit-eligible faculty librarian appointment and reports to the Head of Digital Projects. This job is fully remote eligible, and hybrid (remote and onsite) eligible.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:
  • In collaboration with colleagues in the Division and across the UM System, leads the evaluation, selection, design, and application of metadata schemas and techniques, standards, application profiles, and thesauri to provide access to digital collections.
  • Provides metadata for digital collections according to national and local standards and guidelines, including performing complex subject and content analysis of each item according to national standards using Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms, and more.
  • Creates workflows for, and quality checks, digital exhibits metadata. Oversees metadata design, templates, and implementation of records for digital exhibits.
  • Performs metadata quality control, reconciliation and ethical remediation, and transformations of large batches of metadata to support digital projects and system migration efforts.
    • Specific emphasis on ensuring metadata meets diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) principles and evolving practices in digital librarianship.
  • Provides consultation and training with faculty and graduate students, as needed, for special projects and collaborations.
  • Provides input related to metadata design and workflows in grant proposals.

Salary: The minimum salaries for ranks are: Librarian I $50,000, Librarian II $52,500, Librarian III $57,500, and Librarian IV $65,000.

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS, MSLS, MLIS, etc.) from an ALA-accredited or equivalent program or a graduate degree in an appropriate discipline (history, archival management, or related area);
  • Experience working with digital collections metadata or performing cataloging functions;
  • Familiarity with a variety of metadata standards and controlled vocabularies, such as LCSH, METS, MODS, Dublin Core, XML, or RDF;
  • Experience working with digital asset management, digital repository, and/or digital library systems (e.g., Islandora, DSpace, Omeka, CONTENTdm);
  • Demonstrated past experience with, or the ability to learn, practices which automate repetitive data manipulation and normalization through tools and techniques such as Open Refine for data-parsing; and skills such as XSLT or scripting to transform and remediate metadata;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, in teams that encompass a range of roles and knowledge;
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical ideas to others and in written documentation;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion;
  • Potential to meet promotion requirements in non-tenure track appointment, evidenced through service, research, leadership, innovation, and/or professional development.
