The University of Houston Libraries seeks a collaborative and inclusive Coordinator of Archival Processing to contribute to expanding access to unique and diverse primary source materials that advance original scholarship and critical inquiry. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the coordinator will lead the Libraries’ archival processing efforts in a manner that prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and best supports the university’s mission and goals of research excellence, student success, and social responsibility. The successful candidate has an opportunity to work with a variety of materials and formats that reflect the dynamic and diverse community of Houston and the Gulf Coast region, including energy and sustainability, women’s studies, performing and visual arts, Hispanic studies, Houston hip hop, LGBT history, Texas history, and the University of Houston Archives, among others. Archival collections measure nearly 14,000 linear feet and continue to grow, alongside a rare book collection of over 100,000 volumes.
As a member of the Special Collections Department, a primary responsibility of the coordinator is managing and performing archival processing of records in all formats, including analog and digital materials, and leading policy development as it relates to processing workflows. The position currently supervises one temporary, full-time staff position and a small team of student workers; there is the possibility of supervising additional personnel based on demonstrated need. The coordinator will also have regular, scheduled shifts in the Special Collections reading room, and provide reference support as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program
- Demonstrated experience in the management and processing of archives and manuscripts
- Knowledge of descriptive metadata standards including MARC, DACS, and data structure standards relevant to archival control of collection materials including EAD
- Proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as faculty and students
- Ability to train staff at all levels
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with ArchivesSpace
- Familiarity with digital preservation tools and strategies
- Experience with multiple levels of archival processing, including detailed item-level and More Product Less Process (MPLP) practices
- Supervisory experience
- Project management skills
- Formal training in the archival enterprise or certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists or Digital Archives Specialist certification from the Society of American Archivists
Salary: $67,000 to $70,000 expected hiring range, depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package.
